A significant initiative recently unveiled is the transformation of the old school in Lajares into a Municipal Music School, a project designed to enhance the local community’s cultural life. The project is spearheaded by the La Oliva City Council, with a strong commitment to investing in cultural infrastructure. During a recent site visit, Councilor for Culture, Iballa Pérez, alongside Mayor Isaí Blanco and Councilor Rafael Benítez, expressed their enthusiasm for this initiative. Pérez articulated the objective clearly: to breathe new life into a municipal building that had fallen into disuse, turning it into a hub for musical training—an essential component of the community’s cultural fabric.

An Investment in Heritage

Mayor Isaí Blanco highlighted the council’s extensive investments aimed at rehabilitating cultural spaces throughout La Oliva. With a total budget of €220,000, various improvements across the municipality are in progress. Notable projects include renovations to the Corralejo Auditorium, the construction of a new twelve-bed shelter at the Casita de La Rosa in El Cohombrillo, and upcoming enhancements to the Lajares Cultural Center. These concerted efforts reflect the municipality’s resolve to preserve and elevate its cultural offerings.

The Lajares Music School: A Cultural Nexus

The Lajares area is known for its rich musical and folkloric traditions, making it an ideal location for the new Music School. According to Pérez, this initiative aims to centralize musical education and folklore activities in a community that already boasts a vibrant cultural scene. The first phase of the conversion involves an investment of €40,000 for the building’s rehabilitation.

Once the structural work is completed, a second phase will focus on soundproofing, furnishing, and installing technical equipment necessary for teaching and performing music effectively. This dual-phase approach ensures that the facility will not only be functional but also conducive to nurturing local talent.

Broader Cultural Improvements Across La Oliva

The efforts to enhance cultural facilities in La Oliva extend beyond the Music School. One of the standout projects is the renovation of the Casita de La Rosa, a traditional Majorera building being converted into a cozy shelter for small groups, with a capacity for twelve guests. This project, which also has a budget of €40,000, is expected to complement the nearby Cohombrillo Hostel, collectively increasing the accommodation options to host up to 72 guests.

The Cultural Center of Lajares: Adapting to Community Needs

Another notable investment will soon be made in the Cultural Center of Lajares, where plans to cover the outdoor courtyard are authorized with a budget of €97,000. This enhancement will allow the center to host a wider variety of activities, expanding the community’s access to cultural programming, regardless of the weather.

Improvements at the Auditorio de Corralejo are also noteworthy, with ongoing projects aimed at rehabilitating the stage area and the seating, alongside thorough cleaning of the carpet. These upgrades will help ensure the venue meets modern performance standards, contributing to its status as a community focal point for the arts.

Focusing on Community Needs

Iballa Pérez elaborated that this year, the council will concentrate its rehabilitation efforts on those cultural centers that require the most attention, including Vallebrón, Caldereta, and Tindaya. The objective is to create inclusive and accessible spaces for all community members to enjoy.

Moreover, due to its age and outdated facilities, the Corralejo Cultural Center is identified as a location for complete demolition and renovation. This ambitious project mirrors similar initiatives currently underway in El Cotillo, where construction is expected to be completed by September, further signifying the council’s commitment to revitalizing cultural spaces across the region.
