Initial Approval of Regulation for Los Lajares Agroenvironmental Estate
The Boletín Oficial de La Provincia de Las Palmas recently announced the initial approval of the regulation concerning the use and management of the Finca Agroambiental Los Lajares, situated in the municipality of Haría. This key document aims to define the guidelines for the estate’s use and operational exploitation, a significant step towards sustainable management.
In compliance with current legislation, the regulation is now subject to public scrutiny. From January 18, the document will be available for examination for 30 business days. This period allows residents and stakeholders to present any objections or claims, fostering community involvement in local governance.
Once this period concludes without any submissions, the regulation will receive definitive approval. At this point, it will be published in the Haría Town Hall’s Announcement Board and made accessible through its electronic headquarters.
Goals of the Regulation
Alfredo Villalba, the mayor of Haría, emphasizes that this regulation is vital not only for managing the estate but also for establishing a dedicated management body. This body will operate with a degree of autonomy, ensuring effective agricultural management and promoting the dissemination of the estate’s rich heritage values. By doing this, it aims to blend agricultural practices with community engagement, highlighting the importance of preserving both the environment and agricultural traditions.
Rehabilitation Efforts at Los Lajares
The Haría Town Hall has undertaken various rehabilitation projects to enhance both the agricultural and historical significance of Los Lajares. Bruno Santana, the councilor responsible for contracting, project coordination, technical office, and the primary sector, notes that these efforts are geared towards maximizing the estate’s productive uses. They target scientific-experimental practices, educational purposes, and recreational activities.
These initiatives underscore a commitment to revitalizing the landscape while maintaining respect for its historical context. Such dual-focused efforts help forge a bond between the community and its agricultural roots.
The Unique Landscape of Los Lajares
Spanning 100,000 square meters at the base of the La Corona volcano, Finca Los Lajares boasts an extraordinary agricultural landscape. The estate is characterized by its unique method of cultivation—a system where grapevines and various fruit trees thrive on volcanic coladas devoid of fertile soil. To create cultivable land, farmers had to import soil, resulting in a striking blend of natural and human ingenuity.
Referred to as the Agricultural Landscape of La Corona, Los Lajares not only serves agricultural purposes but is also a site of significant environmental, geological, ethnographic, and botanical interest within Lanzarote. It appeals to researchers and visitors alike, underlining its dual role as both a productive agricultural estate and a center for heritage appreciation.
Environmental, Geological, and Botanical Importance
Los Lajares stands out as a crucial site for environmental and geological studies. Its distinctive volcanic landscape fosters a rich diversity of plant life and showcases a unique interplay between agriculture and nature. The estate’s commitment to sustaining its ecological core while enhancing agricultural practices presents a model of responsible stewardship.
This ongoing effort to showcase Los Lajares as an educational and experimental site encapsulates a forward-thinking approach, directed at both preserving and promoting the cultural and ecological wealth of the region.
In summary, the initial approval of the regulations for Los Lajares marks a pivotal moment in its management, marrying agricultural sustainability with community involvement and heritage conservation. This endeavor highlights the estate’s multifaceted values, ensuring that it continues to thrive for future generations.
