As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, transparency surrounding the island’s infrastructure developments becomes increasingly vital.
The Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce has expressed the need for greater transparency from the Port Authority of Las Palmas concerning the anticipated investments in the Port of Puerto del Rosario. In a recent statement, the Chamber praised the commitment shown by the authority but emphasized the importance of a thorough examination of the 2027 Business Plan to clarify the actual investment efforts proposed for the island.
Upon reviewing the document, the Chamber found that a substantial portion of the cited investment relates to projects previously listed in past Business Plans that remain pending execution. A notable example is the €2 million allocated for enhancing facilities to facilitate a future maritime connection between Puerto del Rosario and Tarfaya. This project is deemed crucial for the economic diversification of Fuerteventura yet has been included repeatedly in budget discussions over the years without progress.
Additionally, the Business Plan repeats the proposal for a 250-meter expansion of the commercial dock, an essential infrastructure enhancement aimed at boosting the port’s operational capacity and competitiveness, which has also featured in earlier planning.
The Chamber of Commerce calls for a clear distinction between newly introduced actions and those that are merely carryovers from previous years. This differentiation is crucial to accurately assess the new investments Fuerteventura can expect in the 2027 fiscal year.
One key initiative highlighted by the Chamber is the electrical connection for the Port of Puerto del Rosario. This project represents one of the few new investments detailed in the Plan, promising to modernize port facilities, enhance energy efficiency, and contribute towards decarbonization goals.
Juan Jesús Rodríguez Marichal, President of the Chamber, stressed that while planning is essential, the true measure of commitment lies in the effective execution of these investments. He pointed out that Fuerteventura requires completed projects rather than unfulfilled promises reappearing in Business Plans year after year.
The Chamber also announced plans to compile a comparative report on the successive Business Plans of the Las Palmas Port Authority. This report will analyze the evolution of planned investments for Puerto del Rosario, their execution status, and timelines for the realization of strategic projects vital to the island.
In conclusion, the Chamber advocates that future Business Plans should include a specific section that clearly outlines new investments, actions that have been deferred, and the status of existing commitments. Transparency in planning and adherence to commitments are identified as critical elements in fostering trust and ensuring that Fuerteventura possesses the necessary infrastructure to enhance its competitiveness and secure its position in the market.
