Pioneering Internship Program for Fuerteventura Students

A Warm Welcome to Future Professionals

On July 10, 2026, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura celebrated a significant milestone as 110 students kicked off their journey into the workforce through a groundbreaking initiative called the Program of Practical Training Scholarships. This program is designed to offer students from vocational and higher education institutions their first taste of professional experience during the summer months of July and August.

Diverse Opportunities Await

Starting from July 15 and continuing until August 31, students will undertake internships across a variety of sectors within the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. These include essential departments such as the Consortium for Water Supply in Fuerteventura (CAAF), the Technological Park, and the Experimental Farm in Pozo Negro. Beyond the government sector, internships will also be available in local municipalities and partnering private companies, as well as third-sector organizations that support the initiative.

Encouraging Young Talent

During the welcoming event, Lola García, the President of the Cabildo, emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for young individuals to develop their careers locally. “We want our youth to find chances to shape their life projects here in Fuerteventura,” she stated. By participating in these internships, students can gain invaluable experience, connect with the professional landscape of the island, and eventually, potentially find future employment opportunities.

Collaboration for Success

Adargoma Hernández, the Education Counselor, elaborated on the ongoing efforts to expand collaboration with private enterprises and organizations. “Each year, we enhance partnerships to offer internships that closely align with students’ training, facilitating their entry into the job market under realistic conditions.” This tailored approach helps ensure that students are not just participants but active contributors in environments relevant to their studies.

A Broad Range of Fields

This year, the initiative has further broadened its scope by including internships in various fields related to students’ educational backgrounds. Participants can look forward to placements in telecommunications, early childhood education, training academies, and other professional services. This diversity enhances the program’s appeal by offering students options that truly reflect their career aspirations.

A Legacy of Success

The Program of Practical Training Scholarships boasts a remarkable trajectory of over 25 years, having offered more than 2,000 students from Fuerteventura their first steps into the job market. It has become a benchmark initiative in the Canary Islands, demonstrating the Cabildo’s commitment to youth development and practical education.

Investing in Education

The Program of Practical Training Scholarships is one of eight educational assistance and scholarship initiatives propelled by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. Collectively, these programs represent a robust investment of nearly five million euros. This financial commitment positions the Cabildo as the island administration with the highest educational investment per capita in the Canary Islands—33.96 euros per resident, in stark contrast to the regional average of 13.11 euros.

Fuerteventura’s commitment to educational initiatives not only shapes the future of its youth but also reinforces the region’s goal of nurturing a well-equipped workforce ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s job market.
