Fuerteventura’s World Championship of Windsurfing and Wingfoil: A Celebration of Sport and Community
In the heart of the Canary Islands, the beautiful municipality of Pájara stands out as the host of one of the main sporting and leisure events not only on the island but also throughout Spain: the World Championship of Windsurfing and Wingfoil. With its 36th edition underway, this championship has established itself as a hallmark of international sporting events in Fuerteventura, largely due to the extensive promotion by local authorities and private partners.
The Organizers Behind the Success
The event is a collaborative effort between the Pájara City Council and the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, with significant contributions from local tourism boards. At the core of this initiative is René Egli By Meliá, whose influence has been far-reaching in developing this sport on the island. Clementina Da Silva Tina, the tourism councilor for Pájara, highlights the vital collaboration required among various municipal departments. “This is not solely the responsibility of the Tourism Department. There are services, works, sports, and energy departments involved,” she explains. The organization demands a great deal of preparation, involving months of meticulous planning to ensure smooth execution.
A Community Event of Grand Scale
From July 18 to August 1, 2024, the championship promises captivating competitions along with an array of entertainment options. Da Silva emphasizes this public-private partnership’s importance, stating, “The private sector invests in our municipality and promotes it throughout the year.” This kind of synergy creates immense benefits for those whose livelihoods are tied to tourism. This year’s edition is anticipated to draw attention globally, showcasing Fuerteventura’s stunning beaches, rich cuisine, and pleasant climate.
Resilience Post-Pandemic
The past few years have not been without challenges, with the cancellation of the event in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, followed by organizational setbacks in 2022. “It was particularly painful to cancel in 2022,” Da Silva recalls, noting the ensuing tensions between the local government and co-organizers. However, the event made a solid return in 2023, although last year’s execution might not have been as flawless. This year sees a revived commitment to better planning, ensuring a well-organized event.
Fun for All Ages in the ‘Day Tent’
This year, the ‘Day Tent’ has been expanded, featuring dedicated areas for competitors as well as extensive family activities. Families can look forward to a variety of children’s events such as bouncy castles, face painting, and storytelling sessions. “We aim to create a welcoming atmosphere where families can enjoy while engaging with the sport,” declares Da Silva. Additionally, a culinary section will provide different local delicacies, ensuring that everyone has something to enjoy.
Star Performers Under the Sun
The entertainment lineup is quite impressive—on July 23, local artist Beelé takes the stage, followed by Nicki Nicole on July 30 and Mestiza closing the event on August 1. Besides these concerts, there will also be evenings dedicated to electronic music and other genres. The tent can accommodate up to 5,000 attendees, managing to create an intimate yet electrifying atmosphere for festival-goers.
High-Stakes Competitions on Stunning Shores
On the sporting front, participants in the GWA will showcase their skills in Wingfoil, focusing on dynamic disciplines like Surf-Freestyle and Freefly Slalom. The PWA will host male and female competitions in Freestyle, Foil-Slalom, and the exciting new format of Slalom X. According to René Egli, these engagements will be “exciting competitions filled with vertiginous action,” placing Fuerteventura firmly on the global sport map.
The beaches of Fuerteventura, particularly Playa de La Barca and Sotavento, provide a breathtaking backdrop, which Da Silva describes as “unbeatable.”
A Call to Experience It Live
Da Silva warmly invites everyone to witness the championship firsthand, emphasizing the unique thrill of seeing the athletes in action. “You simply cannot articulate the excitement of a significant slalom or freestyle competition,” she asserts. For those unable to attend, there will be a live-streaming option available on the René Egli website, but her passionate recommendation remains, “Come and experience it in person; feel the wind and the excitement of the sport!”
This remarkable event certainly sets the stage for Fuerteventura as a prime destination for sports enthusiasts and tourists alike, reinforcing the island’s reputation as a vibrant hub for both competition and community celebrations.
