Spain’s Green Hydrogen Initiative: A €439.4 Million Boost
Spain is making significant strides in the green hydrogen sector, recently announcing a substantial allocation of €439.4 million (approximately $509 million) in production subsidies for three key projects. These initiatives, located primarily in the Huelva region and one in Albacete, were initially shortlisted for funding from the European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) but unfortunately exceeded the allocated EU budget. This new funding aims to support the development of green hydrogen production, a crucial step in Spain’s commitment to renewable energy.

The three projects collectively boast a production capacity of 250 megawatts (MW). The largest of these is Iberdrola’s Huelva facility, which will contribute 140 MW to the green hydrogen landscape. The subsidies will be disbursed over a ten-year period, funded through Spain’s Covid recovery budget. The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) will oversee the allocation of these funds, utilizing the European Commission’s Auction-as-a-Service (AaaS) mechanism. This innovative approach allows member states to support hydrogen projects without the need to establish their own national auction systems, streamlining the funding process.
MITECO has emphasized that recipients of these subsidies must produce certifiable renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO), ensuring that the green hydrogen produced meets stringent compliance standards.
