Celebrating Craftsmanship at the 36th Insular Craft Fair of Antigua
This past Thursday, the vibrant town of Antigua came alive as key figures in the local government and artisanal community gathered to inaugurate the 36th Insular Craft Fair. The ceremony, marked by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting, was attended by the majorera president, Lola García, the town’s mayor, Matías Peña, the island councilor for craftsmanship, Lolina Negrín, and the president of the Mafasca Collective Foundation, Nereida Brito. Their collective presence underscored the importance of craftsmanship in local culture and the community’s support for artisans.
A Showcase of Craftsmanship and Creativity
The fair features nearly 200 artisans from across the Canary Islands, each showcasing their unique crafts across over 30 different trades. The fair’s epicenter is the charming plaza by the church, where attendees can immerse themselves in a rich display of creativity and craftsmanship. From intricate pottery and vibrant textiles to unique jewelry and traditional food items, visitors are treated to an incredible array of local products.
As part of the fair’s extensive program, attendees can look forward to a variety of engaging workshops covering different artisanal techniques. These include popular crafts such as macramé, pottery, leatherwork, and textile decoration. This hands-on experience not only allows participants to learn new skills but also to appreciate the time and effort that goes into each handmade item.
A Taste of Local Flavor
In addition to the stunning crafts, the fair also offers a food market with more than 30 stalls featuring locally-sourced products. Dubbed “kilometers zero,” these offerings highlight the rich agricultural heritage of the region, including mouthwatering cheeses, aromatic coffees, artisanal breads, and delectable jams. This initiative not only supports local producers but also complements the crafts on display, creating a fully immersive cultural experience for all.
Honoring Excellence in Craftsmanship
During the opening ceremony, Mayor Matías Peña took a moment to express gratitude for the artisans who bring their best works to the fair each year. He highlighted the importance of their contribution to the local economy and community pride. Furthermore, he congratulated Bianca Spartari, a talented artisan awarded the Insular Craft Award for this edition, recognizing her distinct contributions to traditional craftsmanship.
Encouraging Community Support
Nereida Brito, representing the Mafasca Collective Foundation, made a poignant call to action during her remarks. She encouraged attendees to support the local craftsmanship sector by purchasing handmade items from the artisans present at the fair. Brito highlighted the significance of investing not only in beautiful products but also in the stories and skills behind them, thereby ensuring the survival and prosperity of traditional crafts.
A Cultural Extravaganza
As the fair continues throughout the weekend, festival-goers can enjoy not just shopping and workshops, but also an array of musical performances. Among the highlights is a concert by the renowned Canarian music group Los Gofiones, scheduled for midday on Sunday. This blend of crafts, food, and music creates a lively atmosphere, celebrating the unique identity and heritage of the Canary Islands.
The 36th Insular Craft Fair of Antigua serves as a vibrant testament to the enduring spirit of artisanship within the community, providing a platform for creativity, culture, and commerce to thrive.
