Celebrating Excellence in Tourism: The Distinguidos Awards in Corralejo

This Friday, September 27, the vibrant town of Corralejo will host a new edition of the Premios Distinguidos—an annual celebration that honors exceptional contributions from businesses and professionals within Fuerteventura’s tourism sector. Orchestrated by the Patronato de Turismo de Fuerteventura, these awards epitomize the island’s commitment to recognizing efforts that enhance the quality and reputation of its tourism offerings.

Recognizing Exceptional Contributions

This year’s awards carry significant weight, acknowledging standout figures and entities in the tourism landscape. The prestigious Mención Honorífica Distinguido del Turismo de Fuerteventura will be conferred upon María Hierro Morales, affectionately known as Mariquita Hierro. A trailblazer in the local culinary scene, Hierro’s contributions have had a lasting impact on the hospitality industry in the region.

Other notable awards include:

  • Playas de Oro for Best Quality Initiative, awarded to Hotel El Mirador.
  • Playas de Oro for Best Trajectory, given to Verdeaurora Bio Farm.
  • Playas de Oro for Best Diversification Initiative, awarded to Puerto Deportivo Puerto Castillo.
  • Special Mention to Collectives, honoring the Fundación Colectivo Mafasca.

These awards not only recognize achievement but also inspire innovation and excellence among industry players.

A Tribute to Legacy

The ceremony will take place at the scenic explanada del muelle deportivo in Corralejo, a fitting backdrop for celebrating achievements in tourism. In a poignant moment, the event will also pay tribute to two influential figures in Fuerteventura’s tourism development: Claudia Morales and Horst Walzock, both of whom recently passed away. Claudia’s role at the Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Tourism Department and Horst’s pioneering efforts in incorporating renewable energy into hotels exemplify unwavering dedication to sustainable tourism.

As Blas Acosta, President of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, pointedly noted, in challenging times for the tourism sector, it becomes vital to highlight the efforts of those diligently working to uphold quality and excellence.

An Engaging Evening of Celebration

The gala promises to be more than just an awards ceremony; it will feature engaging performances, including music from talented timplista Althay Páez and the popular group Aires de Mascona. These cultural elements will enrich the experience, creating a festive atmosphere that celebrates Fuerteventura’s rich heritage.

Spotlight on the Honorees

Mariquita Hierro: A Culinary Pioneer

Born in El Cotillo in 1910, María Hierro Morales (Mariquita Hierro) is a figure etched into the annals of Fuerteventura’s hospitality history. After marrying Domingo Franquiz and raising eight children, her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish a bakery and later a local eatery, where she initially catered to law enforcement and construction workers.

Over time, she transitioned to serving tourists drawn by her renowned fish stew, eventually becoming a magnet for visitors—including notable figures like Adolfo Suárez, Spain’s first democratically elected president. Her legacy is immortalized through various accolades, including a street named after her in El Cotillo.

Hotel El Mirador: A Modern Classic

First opened in 1968 as the Parador in Playa Blanca, Hotel El Mirador has undergone a transformative revival. Following its reopening by the Rodríguez family in 2017, the hotel blends modern amenities with its classic charm, dedicated largely to business clientele.

Additionally, its on-site Culinary and Tourism Training Center signifies a commitment to workforce development in the hospitality sector. This innovative approach aims to position the hotel as a cornerstone for professional excellence in Fuerteventura’s tourism landscape.

Verdeaurora Bio Farm: Sustainability in Action

Verdeaurora Bio Farm, owned by the Mesa family, made its debut in Tenicosquey in 2014, emphasizing ecological practices and sustainability. Visitors have the opportunity to explore projects like Experiencia Bio Farm, showcasing farm operations, as well as the Experiencia Starlight, designed to promote Fuerteventura’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status.

Their commitment to the environment extends to community initiatives, including beach cleanups alongside ecological groups, demonstrating a holistic approach to tourism that intertwines preservation and education.

Puerto Deportivo Puerto Castillo: Revitalizing Maritime Leisure

Founded in 2015, Puerto Deportivo Puerto Castillo has become a key player in providing nautical services to residents and tourists alike. Under new management since 2017, the management team has focused on enhancing visitor experiences, making the port not just a stop for tourists but also an attraction for locals.

With space for 110 leisure boats and hosting numerous water-based activities, Puerto Castillo stands as a testament to the potential of revitalizing community assets for diverse recreational opportunities.

Fundación Colectivo Mafasca: Cultural Vanguard

Fundación Colectivo Mafasca, established in 1986, seeks to invigorate Fuerteventura’s cultural landscape. Their initiatives have created a platform for artistic expression, solidifying the foundation as a cultural cornerstone on the island.

Their flagship event, the Insular Craft Fair, co-created with local authorities, remains a hallmark of artisan creativity in Canary Islands, drawing visitors from across regions. Recognition from the Government of Canary Islands with a Gold Medal further attests to their pivotal role in nurturing cultural engagement and social solidarity.

Through these awards, the Distinguidos highlight the remarkable individuals and entities committed to making Fuerteventura a premier destination, reinforcing the island’s stature as a hub for quality tourism.
