The 37th Artisan Fair in Antigua has officially opened its doors, welcoming visitors to a vibrant showcase of local craftsmanship. With 200 exhibitors, including artisans and market vendors, this event promises a bounty of creativity and cultural richness. The fair was inaugurated on Thursday evening by prominent figures, including President Lola García, Mayor Matías Peña, Margarita de Vera from the Mafasca Foundation, and Lolina Negrín, the Councilor for Crafts.
The fair’s financial backbone comprises €300,000, with €100,000 funded by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the remainder sourced from municipal funds. This backing highlights the importance of such cultural events in promoting local craftsmanship.

The workshops kick off on May 8, with María Hernández leading a session on palm basketry. Following this, Vanessa Lobo will share her expertise in leathercraft. These hands-on experiences provide attendees with invaluable skills while showcasing the talent within the artisan community.
The schedule continues with workshops in traditional crafts, including fabric arts by Bianca Scarpari, macramé by Melissa Herrero, and ceramics led by Andrea Castagna. These sessions, free for everyone, aim to foster appreciation for local craftsmanship and encourage participation in preserving these integral skills.
New Features: Schedule Adjustments and Cultural Activities
This year’s Artisan Fair features several exciting updates, including adjusted closing times for exhibitors. The market will now close at 20:00 instead of the previous 21:00, with the final day events concluding at 15:00 on Sunday.
In a nod to cultural heritage, the fair will spotlight the unique folklore of the Canary Islands, including a traditional “silbo gomero” (whistled language) demonstration. The workshop, facilitated by Ahó Patrimonio e Identidad, aims to educate attendees on how to use this fascinating form of communication. Sponsored by the Canary Islands Institute of Cultural Development and the Government of the Canary Islands, this addition enriches the experience for visitors, blending traditional craftsmanship with cultural traditions.
On Sunday, the city council, in collaboration with Mafasca, will award the Insular Crafts Award 2026 to Bernhard Glauser, a Swiss goldsmith. The event will also feature music from the group Taburiente, adding a festive atmosphere to the closing day.
