New Commercial Dock at Puerto del Rosario: The Next Step in Maritime Evolution

The bustling heart of Fuerteventura, Puerto del Rosario, is set to undergo a significant transformation with the commencement of construction for the new commercial dock at the port. This project is not just a mere expansion; it signifies the region’s commitment to enhancing its logistical capabilities and meeting the increasing demands of maritime activity.

Project Initiation and Financial Backing

Kickstarting this ambitious project, the works will officially begin this Friday, following the signing of the replanning act. This act ensures that the timelines stipulated since the contract award on May 26, 2025, are adhered to effectively. The total financial investment for this development exceeds €40.6 million, with an execution period set for 17 months. The project is generously funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and is being executed by the joint venture that comprises SATO and OHL S.A.

A Port on the Rise

The Puerto del Rosario has seen remarkable growth over the last decade, tripling its traffic in both passengers and cargo. This remarkable increase has rendered the current capacity inadequate, consisting of merely 500 meters of dock length. With the rising demand, operations have become exceedingly tight, necessitating an evolution to accommodate the burgeoning activity, ensuring smoother and more efficient port operations.

Enhancements That Matter

The proposed new dock is more than just an additional space; it is designed to enhance the port’s functionality significantly. It will bolster protection against northern waves, increase operational efficiency, and establish a new docking point for petroleum products. This last addition will free up existing dock space for other essential traffic, including the much sought-after tourist cruise vessels.

To achieve these functionalities, the infrastructure will consist of two aligned docks: an initial slope section featuring cubipod covers, complemented by an additional floatable section composed of prefabricated concrete boxes. Furthermore, an attached fendering section will be incorporated to support operations involving rolling cargo, paving the way for a more versatile and capable dock.

Strategic Importance for the Region

As aptly highlighted by the President of the Port Authority, this undertaking addresses an urgent need for the port, significantly expanding its capacity to manage strategic traffic. It reinforces the port’s vital role as a gateway for goods and supplies to Fuerteventura.

These developments represent a crucial achievement for ensuring the competitiveness of the port in the face of growing logistical demands. Enhancing the port’s infrastructure today prepares it to better respond to the tourism and logistics opportunities of tomorrow, ensuring that Puerto del Rosario remains a pivotal player in the maritime sector.

In summary, the new dock at Puerto del Rosario is set to emerge as an essential element in the region’s infrastructure, promising to uplift its operational capabilities while accommodating the future needs of both the island and its visitors.
