Festival Internacional de Cometas de Corralejo: A Colorful Celebration in the Sands

The Grandes Playas de las Dunas de Corralejo, situated in the stunning backdrop of La Oliva, recently transformed into a vibrant playground during the Festival Internacional de Cometas de Corralejo. This annual event is a magnificent fusion of colorful kites flying against the azure sky, live music pulsating through the air, and inflatable castles bringing joy to the younger attendees.

Celebrating Tradition and Community

The festival attracted a diverse audience, drawing locals and tourists alike, and was graced by notable figures such as Sergio Lloret, the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, and Marcelino Umpiérrez, the councilor of Tourism for La Oliva. Lloret praised the event’s growth and stability, attributing its success not only to an enthusiastic influx of visitors but also to the unwavering support from local kite flyers who return year after year. This year, the change in venue to the beach was commended for showcasing the island’s natural beauty while respecting the environment.

Thrilling Combats and Acrobatics

A highlight of the festival was the thrilling Rokaku competitions, where small hexagonal kites engaged in spectacular aerial battles, attempting to knock each other down. The stunning display of maneuvers captivated audiences and participants alike. One participant, German kite flyer Sabine Elbert, shared insights into the finesse required: “The key is knowing how to guide the tip of the kite at just the right moment,” she explained, illustrating the skill and strategy involved in the exhilarating combat.

Equally mesmerizing were the acrobatic kites, performing perfect synchronized dances in the sky without their strings tangling. The synchronized movements of master kite flyers, following their leader’s commands, left onlookers spellbound, showcasing the intricate partnership and coordination required in this aerial dance.

Workshops for Young Flyers

In a heartwarming initiative, children from the Asociación Pequeño Valiente participated in kite-making workshops. More than twenty kids, accompanied by family members, crafted their kites from simple household materials. Social worker Sara Sosa emphasized the importance of such activities, stating, “These initiatives help take them out of the hospital environment and back to a space of leisure and joy.”

Guided by experts Juan Carlos Ventura and Rosario Sánchez from the Asociación Torbellino y Ventolera, the children learned the principles of symmetry, balance, and aerodynamics necessary for successful kite flying. Almost a hundred participants, both young and old, discovered the joys of creating kites, fostering a sense of community and shared enthusiasm.

A Celebration of Music and Joy

The beach wasn’t just about kites; it was a festival of joy with inflatable castles for kids and live musical performances that filled the air with lively rhythms. The 101 Brass Band brought a contagious energy, getting attendees to dance amidst the vibrant colors of kites soaring overhead. Additionally, a tribute to the beloved artist Juan Luis Guerra delighted the crowd, immersing everyone in Latin rhythms and familiar melodies that urged them to celebrate through dance.

Upcoming Events and Highlights

As the festival continued into the afternoon, the festivities expanded to the center of Corralejo, featuring parades, live DJs, and a much-anticipated concert by Los Salvapantallas at 10:00 PM. Attendees looked forward to the concluding celebrations set for Sunday, which promised even more family-friendly workshops, kite displays, aerial competitions, and the prestigious award ceremony marking the end of this 35th edition of the Festival Internacional de Cometas de Corralejo.

In this enchanting setting, the festival not only celebrates the artistry of kite flying but also reinforces community ties and shared joy, making it a cherished event for both locals and visitors alike.
