Record Number of Kites in the Sky over Fuerteventura

The Colorful Spectacle of the International Kite Festival in Corralejo

On a stunning Friday, blue skies, moderate temperatures, and perfect wind conditions greeted the 2022 International Kite Festival in Corralejo, taking place at the breathtaking Grandes Playas de Corralejo. This inaugural flight was attended by local dignitaries, including Pilar González, the mayor of La Oliva, and Jessica de León, the tourism advisor from Fuerteventura, among others. Their presence highlighted not just the local pride in hosting such an event, but also the festival’s importance in showcasing the island’s natural beauty.

The Grand Opening

Adding a touch of whimsy to the event, Mayor Pilar González herself held the festival’s inaugural kite: a massive panda-shaped kite that officially kicked off the festivities. Her words were filled with enthusiasm as she expressed how this festival embodies all La Oliva has to offer — from wind and sand to crystal-clear waters and stunning views of Lobos Island and Lanzarote. “It is everything for those who come drawn by the festival of kites,” she stated, capturing the spirit of community and natural beauty that characterizes the event.

A Significant Promotion for the Region

Tourism advisor Jessica de León emphasized the tremendous international promotion that comes with hosting such a spectacular event. Highlighting the festival’s roots in local culture, she described it as a “family-friendly product” that brings families together at the beach while respecting protected natural spaces. The festival allows visitors to enjoy the scenic surroundings while participating in a partnership between locals and invitees, creating lasting bonds.

Marcelino Umpiérrez, the councilor for tourism, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the festival’s role in putting La Oliva on the map. It attracts participants and visitors from various countries, mainly from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and the Netherlands. November is particularly beneficial for these markets, as they face colder weather at home while enjoying the comfortable warmth of Corralejo.

An Explosion of Colors in the Sky

Following the inaugural flight, the skies came alive as hundreds of kites soared high. From small, aerodynamic kites designed for acrobatics to larger kites that exceeded 15 meters in length, the spectacle was nothing short of mesmerizing. The skies were a vibrant palette featuring children’s characters, dragons, giant octopuses, romantic hearts, and even sharks, transforming Corralejo into a bustling tapestry of color and life.

Engaging the Local Youth

The festival also aims to foster a new generation of kite enthusiasts. Schools from La Oliva, including Lajares, Villaverde, Bernabé Figueroa, María Castrillo, Tindaya, and Parque Natural Corralejo, were actively involved, with 234 children experiencing the joy of flying their own kites alongside seasoned kite flyers. It is an opportunity for the youth to engage in a unique cultural experience that combines skill, creativity, and community spirit.

A Day Full of Festivities and Music

As the day unfolds, festivities continue with a host of activities lined up. A concert by Qué Chimba is set to kick off at 3 PM in the festival’s designated area. The atmosphere will be enhanced with a parade featuring the lively 101 Bras Band at 8 PM, ensuring the streets of Corralejo are filled with music and jubilation. Another performance by Qué Chimba is planned at 9 PM in the heart of Corralejo, cementing the festival’s role not just as an event for kite enthusiasts but as a vibrant community celebration.

Looking Ahead to Tomorrow’s Highlights

Tomorrow promises to be equally exciting, with more exhibitions of both acrobatic and static kites, along with the much-anticipated Rokaku battles. These activities will commence at 10 AM on the Grandes Playas, setting the stage for yet another colorful day.

In addition, various workshops for families to create their own kites and participate in environmental workshops will take place from 10 AM to 5 PM, providing hands-on, engaging experiences throughout the day. A lively parade will once again take to the streets at noon, followed by a tribute concert to Juan Luis Guerra at 3 PM.

The evening will culminate back in the town center with more festivities, featuring DJs at 9 PM and a closing performance by Salvapantallas starting at 10 PM.

Local and Regional Support

The International Kite Festival in Corralejo is organized by the Tourism Council of La Oliva, with support from the Tourism Council of Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands Government’s Tourism Department. This collaborative effort not only enhances the festival’s appeal but also ensures that it becomes a recurring highlight in the region’s cultural calendar.

In essence, the festival not only showcases artistic expression through kites but also reinforces community ties, promotes eco-friendly practices, and invites tourists to revel in the vibrant life of Corralejo. It’s an event that captivates the imagination and celebrates the beauty of the natural world, threaded with local culture and joy.
