A Stellar Line-Up of Competitors

This year’s auction featured an impressive roster: twenty stallions and forty auctioneers participated, showcasing the best of the local livestock industry. Such a diverse selection created intense excitement among the crowd, where farmers and horse enthusiasts alike gathered to witness the event unfold in a bustling ring designed to accommodate a significant number of spectators.

Competitive Bidding at Its Peak

The auction was marked by thrilling bids, as local ranchers from Fuerteventura and Lanzarote vied for the finest stallions. The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the highest bid of the day, made for a standout stallion from Andrés Rodríguez’s ranch in Lajares. This prized horse commanded a staggering 2,625 euros, snatching the title of the most expensive stallion sold, surpassing the record from the previous year and earning a place among the highest bids in recent history.

Following closely was a stallion from Javier Cerdeña of Tesjuate, which fetched 2,200 euros, secured by Esteban Rodríguez from Lajares. These significant bids reflect the high quality and genetic potential that these animals possess, further underscoring the importance of improving livestock genetics in the region.

Recognizing Excellence in Livestock

In addition to the top bids, the auction also honored notable achievements, such as the third highest bid for a stallion awarded the second prize for young males in the FEAGA livestock competition. Owned by Blas Gregorio of Villaverde, this stallion sold for 2,150 euros to Pedro Peña from Valle de Santa Inés, showcasing the diverse talents among breeders participating in the auction.

Community and Collaboration

The stallion auction is just one of the many activities that highlight the collaborative spirit of the Asociación de Criadores de Cabra de Fuerteventura. Their involvement in the event promotes not only the breeding of the Majorera goat and its livestock but also fosters a sense of community among farmers and breeders. The association serves as a hub for knowledge exchange, connecting various stakeholders who share a commitment to enhancing the genetics and quality of their breeds.

In response to increasing participation, the ring has seen recent renovations designed to improve seating capacity, ensuring that more fans can experience the electrifying atmosphere of the auction and the fair at large. This popularity illustrates the auction’s significance as a meeting point for breeders, buyers, and the general public, all eager to celebrate agricultural traditions.

From fierce bidding wars to the camaraderie among breeders, the stallion auction at FEAGA exemplifies the rich agricultural heritage of Fuerteventura. It serves as a testament to the island’s dedication to celebrating its livestock, promoting genetic improvement, and fostering community spirit.
