Antigua Kicks Off the 37th Insular Craft Fair with Participation from All the Canary Islands

In a vibrant celebration of craftsmanship and culture, the recent announcement regarding the fair organized by the Ayuntamiento de Antigua has captured the attention of locals and tourists alike. The mayor, Peña, revealed that this year’s edition boasts a total cost of 300,000 euros, a commitment that underscores the town’s dedication to preserving its rich artisanal traditions. Peña emphasized that whether or not external support is available, this commitment to the fair remains unwavering: “A financial effort that Antigua will guarantee with or without collaboration, defending thirty-seven years of enhanced editions through the hard work and presence of generations of craftsmen and women,” he stated.

Mafasca and Volunteering: Foundations of the Fair’s Success

A pivotal aspect of the fair’s smooth operation can be attributed to the collaboration between the foundation and the Ayuntamiento, as highlighted by Margarita De Vera, spokesperson for the Fundación Colectivo Mafasca. She pointed out that the participation of the artisans themselves plays a crucial role in the event’s success, fostering a sense of community. De Vera placed special emphasis on the invaluable contribution of volunteers whose aim is to ensure that all present artisans feel at home as they showcase their unique and one-of-a-kind creations.

During the inaugural ceremony, De Vera also took the opportunity to congratulate the recipient of the Insular Craftsmanship Award 2026, jeweler Bernard Glauser. Glauser has been recognized for his outstanding commitment and dedication in fostering the growth of this fair over the years, embodying the spirit of the local craft community.

The Cabildo Advocates for Local Craftsmanship as Authentic Expression of the Majorero Identity

Attention turned to the cultural significance of the fair through the comments made by Lola García, president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. She articulated the symbolic value of the event, emphasizing that it goes beyond merely a trade fair. “It is a pride for our island, showcasing the culmination of the work that our artisans undertake year-round, representing the most authentic expression of our people and a platform to promote the importance of supporting local craftsmanship,” García passionately conveyed during the event.

Moreover, García reiterated the ongoing support provided by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura to the artisanal sector throughout the year. This support spans economic, logistical, and training initiatives, all aimed at strengthening and preserving the traditions that form the core identity of Majorero culture. Her remarks serve as a reminder of the vital role that local craftsmanship plays not only in the economy but also in the cultural tapestry of the island.
