Morro Jable Will Have a Marina Focused on “Sustainability” by 2024

Marina Jandía: A New Era for Fuerteventura’s Maritime Scene

Marina Jandía is set to be a transformative development located in the picturesque Morro Jable, adding a new dimension to the island of Fuerteventura. Covering a comprehensive area, it will feature docking facilities for maritime vessels and a sprawling 8,500 square meters of public spaces, complete with promenades, terraces, and a variety of dining establishments. This venture promises to not only enhance the local tourism appeal but also add value to the overall experience of visitors to Fuerteventura.

A Vision Realized

José Calero, the president of Calero Marinas, expressed heartfelt pride as he reminisced about the company’s 40-year journey. With the second generation now at the helm, the family business is taking on new challenges, and Calero enthusiastically declared that the long-awaited marina project is finally becoming a reality. “We will commence the sports port that Fuerteventura deserves this November,” he announced with palpable excitement.

Economic Backbone

The President of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, underscored the importance of this project in the context of the region’s economic resilience. Despite prevailing uncertainties, Torres reported that the archipelago is projected to finish 2022 with positive economic data, positioning itself as one of the few global destinations capable of growth in the upcoming winter season. A self-proclaimed regular visitor to Fuerteventura, he credited Calero Marinas for their exemplary work and heralded Marina Jandía as the dawn of a new chapter in the island’s history.

Community Impact

Sergio Lloret, President of the Cabildo, also articulated the significance of Marina Jandía for both Morro Jable and Pájara. He reflected on Morro Jable’s evolution from a humble fishing village to Fuerteventura’s main inter-island connection with Gran Canaria. The marina is envisioned as a catalyst for boosting nautical activities and tourism, complemented by some of the best beaches in the region.

Pedro Armas, Mayor of Pájara, highlighted that the marina would represent a pivotal moment for both the municipality and the island. He extended gratitude to the Calero family for choosing Pájara for this investment, predicting that Marina Jandía would become one of Spain’s premier sports ports, benefiting the local community for generations.

Elevating Visitor Experience

Juan Jesús Rodríguez Marichal, President of the Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce, noted that Marina Jandía will enhance visitor experiences significantly. This new development will lend prestige to Fuerteventura as a destination, adding a vital component to the tourism value chain in the nautical and sports segments. “Having Calero Marinas involved in our development is nothing short of a luxury,” he remarked.

Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability has been a cornerstone of Calero Marinas since its inception in 1983. With a longstanding partnership with WWF, the company has consistently prioritized environmental stewardship. In 2022 alone, it received its twenty-seventh Blue Flag award, a testament to its compliance with environmental standards and commitment to nature conservation.

Calero envisions Marina Jandía as a flagship project in sustainability, aiming for complete energy autonomy. The marina will be equipped with renewable energy sources and storage systems to minimize the carbon footprint. José Juan Calero emphasized that every aspect of Marina Jandía is designed with sustainability in focus.

Eco-Friendly Design

Following the “working with nature” paradigm, Marina Jandía’s infrastructure will embrace environmental considerations from the project’s initial stages. The design process, guided by maritime project designer Carlos Acosta, aims to integrate with the local ecology while aligning with the strategy for a circular economy. By minimizing resource use, generating less waste, and reusing materials from existing structures, the marina’s construction seeks to tread lightly on the environment.

Rehabilitation of deteriorated areas, such as access paths to nearby beaches, will further unify the project with its natural surroundings, ensuring that the marina enhances—rather than detracts from—the scenic beauty of Morro Jable.

Architectural Inspiration

The architectural design of Marina Jandía draws heavily from traditional Canarian architecture while injecting modern elements that create unique culinary spaces overlooking the sea. The marina will host five gastronomic establishments featuring sustainable culinary practices, along with two kiosks designed for enjoying sunrises and sunsets. This blend of innovation and heritage will not only cater to tourists but also provide a welcoming social hub for local residents.

The project will also incorporate various commercial spaces, including a beach club, diving school, nautical charter services, and boutique shopping options, creating a comprehensive recreational environment for visitors and locals alike.

Enhanced Services and Technology

Marina Jandía will offer essential services to vessels, including electrical connections, water supply, and broadband internet access. Moreover, it will introduce advanced waste management systems for vessels, ensuring responsible practices.

Technology will play a crucial role in managing services efficiently. An innovative consumption management platform will enable users to activate and deactivate services through mobile devices, streamlining operations while promoting environmental consciousness.

Marina Jandía uniquely blends luxurious living, environmental responsibility, and regional heritage, promising a vibrant future for Fuerteventura’s maritime landscape. The commitment of the Calero family to sustainability and community enhancement underscores the marina’s potential as a transformative force in both tourism and local living.
