The anticipation is palpable as the Cabildo de Fuerteventura finalizes preparations for the much-awaited Gran Baile de Taifas. Scheduled for this Friday, May 29, at the recinto ferial de Puerto del Rosario, this iconic event is organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Council and the Town Hall of Puerto del Rosario. This year introduces a new feature: doors will open at 7:15 PM, aiming for a smoother flow and improved experience for attendees.

Local dignitaries including President Lola García, Mayor David de Vera, and Cultural Councilor Rayco León have been actively involved in overseeing the preparations, ensuring this year’s event lives up to expectations.

A Celebration of Tradition

The Gran Baile de Taifas isn’t just a dance; it’s a vibrant showcase of Canarian culture. This year, it will feature the exhibition titled ‘Indumentaria Viva,’ curated by Juan Carlos Romero and Oliver Ojeda, spotlighting traditional clothing. Attendees are encouraged to arrive dressed in traditional attire, fostering a genuine connection to local customs. Part of the evening’s festivities will also include honoring individuals recognized for their efforts in preserving traditional dress, a living expression of both Canary and Majorera identity.

Musical entertainment will be provided by a varied lineup of groups from Fuerteventura and beyond, promising an exuberant atmosphere. The evening will begin with performances from students of the Insular Music School, specifically those from Valles de Ortega and La Oliva. Featured groups will include local favorites such as Tababaire and Parranda El Callao from Fuerteventura, alongside performers from Lanzarote, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria. This musical synergy not only highlights diverse talents but also fosters cross-island camaraderie through the medium of music.

A Community Effort

President Lola García emphasized the importance of the Gran Baile de Taifas, calling it “the most attended event for the Day of the Canaries throughout the Archipelago,” and a grand finale of the ‘Mayo 100% Canarias’ program organized by the Cabildo. This event serves not just to celebrate but to instill pride among the youth and connect them with the history and values of their heritage.

In her remarks, Garcia praised the meticulous planning by the Culture Department of the Cabildo and the collaborative efforts with other departments and local authorities, including the Local Police and Civil Protection teams, who play vital roles in ensuring a safe and enjoyable event. The enthusiasm of the Majorera community, which consistently brings energy to this special day, was particularly highlighted.

Adding to the excitement, Mayor David de Vera shared his appreciation for the Cabildo’s dedication to the Gran Baile de Taifas, reiterating its significance in celebrating local identity and the deep-rooted connection to the territory.

Finally, Rayco León, the Cultural Councilor, noted that after a month packed with programming focused on Canarian culture, the Gran Baile de Taifas stands as a joyful conclusion to a celebration rich in music and tradition.
