Marcelino Cerdeña Ruiz: A Political Legacy in Betancuria
Marcelino Cerdeña Ruiz, the long-serving mayor of Betancuria, made headlines recently with his decision to resign after an impressive 17 years in municipal politics. His tenure, marked by significant contributions and community involvement, culminated in this choice, influenced primarily by his upcoming retirement age. Known for his unwavering dedication, Cerdeña leaves behind an indelible mark on the historic municipality he has served since 2003.
A Promised Transition
The news of Cerdeña’s resignation was not entirely unexpected. In his circles, he had openly expressed intentions to leave the political arena, especially after he confirmed that his last election would be his final term. This sentiment was echoed during a gathering with friends and colleagues from his party, Unidos Por Betancuria (UPBE), indicating a thoughtful and premeditated exit from the office. Cerdeña’s decision to step down before the completion of his term has surprised many, as he only served slightly over a year after being re-elected.
Political Evolution
Cerdeña’s political journey began at a young age when he joined the Asamblea Majorera (AM) at just 15 years old. Drawn to its assembly-based ideology and commitment to island interests, he cultivated a strong foundation in local governance. In 2014, however, he made a pivotal shift by departing from Coalición Canaria (CC), despite holding an absolute majority in Betancuria, arguing that the local government had failed in financial solidarity, particularly concerning the distribution of funds from the Régimen Económico y Fiscal (REF).
Founding New Horizons
After leaving CC, Cerdeña founded Unidos Por Betancuria in June 2014, leading his party to three consecutive electoral victories with absolute majorities. His political ascent began in 2003 with a position in the municipality under CC, where Cerdeña sat in opposition. However, he successfully assumed the role of mayor in 2007, aided by the socialist party, and continued to see success through subsequent elections.
Diverse Roles and Responsibilities
In addition to his role in local government, Cerdeña also sought broader influence within the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. He ran in coalition during the previous legislative term and secured a position as a council member responsible for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, as well as Food Sovereignty. Yet, in December 2020, he resigned to facilitate a motion against the then-president, Blas Acosta, although that initiative was short-lived due to Acosta’s premature departure.
A Thoughtful Farewell
In his farewell letter, delivered to residents of Betancuria, Cerdeña articulated his motivations for stepping away from politics. He expressed the need to retire gracefully, emphasizing the importance of generational renewal in local governance. “I have always believed that retirement is not just a right, but a duty,” he conveyed, underscoring his desire to allow fresh perspectives to emerge in the borough’s leadership.
Cerdeña also took the opportunity to apologize for any errors he might have committed during his career, promising support to anyone in need. His warmth and self-reflection further endeared him to the community he loved to serve.
The Inauguration of the Successor
This pivotal transition in leadership raises anticipation for the next chapter in Betancuria’s governance. On the following Thursday, Enrique Cerdeña, Marcelino’s long-time deputy and ally, is set to be elected as the new mayor. Enrique’s extensive experience in various municipal roles—ranging from Civil Protection to Tourism—positions him well to carry on the community-focused initiatives championed by his predecessor.
The future holds great potential for Betancuria, especially under the impending leadership of Enrique Cerdeña, who also bears the family name but brings his unique vision and expertise to the table. As this historical municipality embarks on a new era, the legacy of Marcelino Cerdeña will undoubtedly remain a source of inspiration for residents and leadership alike.
