The Majorero Boat is Now Operational After the September Incident in Lobos

A New Chapter for El Barco Majorero: Resilience on the Waters

Restoration After Adversity

El Barco Majorero, the iconic ferry operated by Naviera Nortour, has triumphantly returned to service following a challenging incident near Isla de Lobos last September. The vessel, which suffered significant damage and was left semi-submerged, has since undergone an extensive restoration effort. This journey from distress to rehabilitation showcases not only the durability of the boat but also the spirit of its crew and operators.

“On May 30, we proudly completed our inaugural journey after the comprehensive reconstruction,” stated a spokesperson for the company. The Barco Majorero, operational since 1990 and the only ferry with a regular service between Corralejo and Isla de Lobos, has been revitalized with a focus on enhancing safety and comfort for its passengers.

Innovations in Design and Structure

A cornerstone of the renovation was the meticulous overhaul of the hull. The team replaced much of the original structure with durable woods like oak, mulberry, and sapeli. These materials not only grant the ferry improved stability but significantly enhance its strength and watertight qualities.

Improvements didn’t stop at the hull; the main deck and bow structure were modernized, introducing synthetic teak decking that enhances both aesthetics and practicality. Passengers can now enjoy a smoother, safer experience while cruising through the stunning waters of the archipelago.

Upgrades to Machinery and Safety Features

The overhaul extended to the machinery as well. The engine room received a complete makeover with modern materials aimed at bolstering efficiency and safety. The engines and gearboxes were meticulously repaired, ensuring optimal performance, while the entire propulsion and steering systems were renewed.

Safety was a prime concern throughout the renovation. The company implemented automation for bilge pumps, significantly enhancing the vessel’s response to flooding risks. Additionally, improved fire safety systems and enhanced video surveillance were installed, underscoring a commitment to passenger security.

Commitment to Quality and Community

El Barco Majorero is more than just a means of transportation; it’s a cherished emblem of the region, distinguished with the SICTED quality seal since 1996. Nortour emphasizes their dedication not only to safety and operational excellence but also to the local community. “As a family-run business rooted in Majorero traditions, every partnership we hold is invaluable,” the spokesperson remarked.

This ethos of community isn’t merely corporate jargon; it reflects the significant emotional investment made during the restoration process. The leaders at Nortour acknowledged the considerable economic expenditure involved, but also stressed that the real engagement came from the emotional ties and personal commitment of the team. “The restoration journey was complex and filled with challenges, requiring extensive time, dedication, and tenacity,” the company added.

Service Schedule and Future Outlook

Now fully operational, El Barco Majorero offers three daily departures from Corralejo at 10:00, 11:15, and 13:00, with return trips from Isla de Lobos at 11:40, 14:20, and 17:00. This schedule ensures that locals and tourists alike have ample opportunity to explore the pristine beauty of Isla de Lobos.

With its renewed spirit and upgraded features, El Barco Majorero stands not only as a means of transport, but also as a symbol of resilience and commitment to excellence in service within the Canary Islands. The journey of this beloved vessel continues, promising safe and enjoyable travels for all who board.
