On July 23rd, Fred. Olsen Express will proudly mark its 30th anniversary of dedicated maritime service between the Canary Islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Over these three decades, the company has become a vital link for both residents and tourists, successfully transporting an impressive 13 million passengers and three million vehicles, including personal cars and cargo trucks.

The Journey Begins

Fred. Olsen, S.A. commenced its operations on July 24, 1989, initially deploying the ferry named “Betancuria.” This vessel had the capacity to carry more than 400 passengers and operated between the ports of Playa Blanca and Corralejo. Notably, the journey took just 35 minutes and ran with a frequency of three trips per day. The introduction of the “Betancuria” embodied the company’s commitment to providing swift and comfortable travel, coupled with exceptional onboard service.

Expanding Capacity and Service

As demand grew, Fred. Olsen Express prioritized customer experience and upgraded its fleet. The original “Betancuria” was eventually replaced by the “Buganvilla,” a larger ferry boasting a capacity of 800 passengers. This trend of expansion led to a significant development in 2003, when the cutting-edge “Bocayna Express” entered the route. This modern fast ferry significantly reduced travel time, allowing passengers to traverse the sea in just 20 minutes while providing seven connections daily from each island.

Celebrating Three Decades of Trust

To commemorate this notable milestone, Fred. Olsen Express has released a special video celebrating its 30 years of service. As the company expands, it is set to celebrate 25 years of connecting Gran Canaria and Tenerife in December.

Travelers using the service during July and August can enter the draw aboard all routes by simply completing a straightforward form through its digital entertainment system, OnBoard Club.
