A New Sci-Fi Adventure in Fuerteventura
Lajares, a picturesque village in the La Oliva municipality of Fuerteventura, has recently drawn the attention of Spanish director Gonzalo López-Gallego. He is set to film his latest science fiction project, El jardín de té, on this stunning island. Following his 2022 success with the thriller American Star, López-Gallego is excited to bring a film that he describes as a “contemplative, existential, philosophical, poetic” piece to life.
The Vision Behind the Film
López-Gallego’s ambitious vision for El jardín de té combines suspense, emotional depth, and stunning visual storytelling. The Fuerteventura Film Commission highlights the unique landscapes of the island—its volcanic terrains, illuminating sunshine, and diverse natural settings—as integral components of the film’s narrative. These elements will not only shape the story but are expected to enhance the visual experience, creating a rich tapestry of sights and sounds.
Introducing the Cast
The film boasts a talented cast led by Andrés Gertrúdix, hailed as one of the most versatile actors in the Spanish audiovisual landscape. With an impressive background in film, television, and theater, Gertrúdix is a captivating choice to portray the complex characters that are bound to emerge in López-Gallego’s narrative.
The Crew Behind the Scenes
The production team for El jardín de té includes some experienced professionals who are well-acquainted with managing ambitious film projects. Yraya Perdomo serves as the first assistant director and script supervisor, bringing her extensive experience from both national and international productions. Her role is crucial in coordinating different aspects of filming and ensuring everything runs smoothly.
The direction of photography is in the hands of José David Montero, who is renowned for his aesthetic sensibility. Montero’s skilled artistry in lighting and visual storytelling promises to enhance the film’s atmospheric qualities and its overall aesthetic identity.
A Commitment to Excellence
The project is being produced by Mantarraya Films, an independent audiovisual company dedicated to crafting high-quality cinematic experiences while nurturing artistic innovation. Their commitment to excellence sets high expectations for the final product.
Fuerteventura as a Prime Filming Destination
Nereida Calero, the councilor for the Fuerteventura Film Commission, emphasizes the significance of well-respected professionals choosing to shoot their works on the island. She describes López-Gallego’s return as an affirmation of the ongoing efforts to establish Fuerteventura as a premier audiovisual destination, enhancing its reputation within the film industry.
A Journey Beyond Fuerteventura
After the initial filming phase in Fuerteventura, the crew will transition to other island locations and even move to Asturias for part of the production. Interestingly, they plan to return to Fuerteventura by the end of summer to complete significant portions of the movie.
Support for Local Productions
El jardín de té is one of 36 audiovisual projects to receive financial backing from the Canary Island government in 2025. This initiative, managed by the Directorate General of Cultural Innovation and Creative Industries, allocated a significant budget of €3,329,000 to various projects showcasing creativity on the islands. Such support not only elevates local talent but also stimulates the entire audiovisual sector.
A Cinematic Legacy
López-Gallego’s previous film, American Star, marked a milestone as the first film shot entirely in Fuerteventura. Featuring Ian McShane, known for roles in Deadwood and John Wick, the film delves into the narrative surrounding the wreckage of a transatlantic ship on Garcey Beach, Pájara, offering a thrilling glimpse into the darker aspects of island life.
As El jardín de té takes shape, Fuerteventura continues to establish itself as a vibrant backdrop for cinematic storytelling, infusing local landscapes with global narratives that captivate audiences far and wide.
