New Educational Infrastructure Plan in Canary Islands: A Commitment to Growth and Quality

In a momentous announcement, Soledad Monzón, the Councillor for Education and Universities of the Government of the Canary Islands, unveiled an ambitious new plan for educational infrastructure in La Oliva. This initiative responds directly to the region’s growing population, aiming to boost educational facilities and enhance the overall quality of education.

Investments Tailored for La Oliva

Among the pivotal projects outlined in Monzón’s plan are the construction of new educational facilities that will serve the expanding population in the northern municipality of La Oliva. Plans include a new Early Childhood and Primary Education Center (CEIP) in El Cotillo, another CEIP in Lajares, a Secondary Education Center in Corralejo, and an expansion of the existing La Oliva Secondary Education Institute (IES). The entire initiative spans from 2019 to 2025, with an estimated investment of around €20 million earmarked for these developments.

Collaboration with Local Authorities

In a meeting with La Oliva’s Mayor, Isaí Blanco, and the municipal government, it became clear that cooperation between the regional government and local authorities is crucial to the successful execution of these projects. Notably, the local government has completed the administrative processes to allocate land in El Cotillo for the new CEIP, awaiting only city council approval. This proactive approach will facilitate swift progression into the architectural design and execution phases.

Future Projects in the Pipeline

In addition to the plans for El Cotillo, local authorities are actively searching for suitable land for the new CEIP in Lajares. The commitment from the municipal government to provide the necessary space is an encouraging sign of collaboration aimed at fulfilling educational needs in the region.

Enhanced Planning and Execution

Monzón emphasized that this educational infrastructure plan represents a serious and reliable forecast for substantial projects, allowing public administrations to perform all necessary planning and administrative tasks efficiently. This approach aims to prevent delays in critical educational projects, as seen in Villaverde, where there has been a significant historical demand for a new school that has been in the pipeline for more than two decades.

On-Site Progress: CEIP Villaverde

Recently, Monzón also visited the construction site of the new CEIP Villaverde, where she provided updates on the project’s progress. The ambitious plan for this new center aims to open its doors for the 2019/2020 academic year. Currently, the first phase of the project is complete, with ongoing work focusing on the tiling, exterior beautification, and installation of electrical and plumbing systems.

Capacity for Growth

Once completed, the CEIP Villaverde is expected to accommodate 225 students, with shared spaces designed for up to 300, ensuring the institution can adapt to future enrollment increases. With a significant budget of €2,119,337, the center will include six primary classrooms, three classrooms for early childhood education, and specialized spaces for music, IT, as well as common areas.

Comprehensive Facilities for All

The educational infrastructure will also feature modern amenities, including a multi-sport court, a gymnasium with changing rooms, a library, administrative areas, a kitchen, and a dining area. Additional considerations have been made to provide distinct play areas tailored to different educational levels, creating an environment conducive to learning and development.

Through this comprehensive educational infrastructure plan, the Government of the Canary Islands and the local authorities of La Oliva signify their commitment to creating robust educational opportunities for the region’s youth, thereby fostering a brighter future for the entire community.
