Gran Canaria Philharmonic and the 42nd International Music Festival of the Canary Islands: A Musical Journey in Fuerteventura

The beautiful island of Fuerteventura is set to reverberate with the enchanting sounds of classical music as the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra (OFGC) takes center stage. Under the esteemed direction of Karel Mark Chichon, this year’s festival will focus on the timeless works of Mozart, marking the beginning of the 42nd International Music Festival of the Canary Islands (FIMC). This exciting announcement was made earlier this week, paving the way for an extraordinary musical experience from January 14 to February 7.

A Diverse Musical Programming

The festival showcases a rich and varied musical agenda, with six standout concerts planned for the audience. Most performances will be held at the Palace of Training and Congresses, alongside other venues like the Auditorium of Antigua. Tickets and subscriptions are already available for purchase, ensuring that attendees can secure their spot for this much-anticipated annual event.

The programming includes acclaimed groups and artists such as the Ensemble Il Giardino d’Amore, renowned soprano Raquel Lojendio with pianist Chiky Martín, and talented young pianist Gabriel Ducatenzeiler. This multi-faceted lineup promises a blend of classical traditions and modern interpretations, reaching far beyond the boundaries of the concert hall.

Exciting Offerings in Parallel

In addition to classical performances, the festival will feature innovative segments under the En Paralelo section. Among these are the latest show by the Pieles company, titled Arahal, and a concert by the Guiguan Project, featuring the celebrated trumpeter Markus Stockhausen. These unique offers emphasize the festival’s commitment to presenting a wide array of artistic expressions, enriching the cultural fabric of the region.

Highlights of the Concert Series

The musical journey commences on January 14 with a captivating performance by the Guiguan Project, featuring Markus Stockhausen at the Palace of Training and Congresses. The group consists of three musicians deeply committed to crafting a distinctive style rooted in their island heritage: Javier Infante on guitar, Alexis Lemes on timple, and Javier Colina on double bass. Their collaboration with Stockhausen, a prominent figure in European jazz, guarantees an exhilarating start to the festival.

Following this, the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra will take the spotlight on January 16. Under Chichon’s direction, they’ll perform a captivating monographic concert, showcasing Mozart’s La finta giardiniera overture, the Sinfonia Concertante, and Symphony No. 29. These masterpieces from the 1770s highlight the genius of Mozart during a time when he balanced his work as a court musician in Salzburg with his extraordinary creative output.

Fostering Local Talent

The festival also places significant emphasis on nurturing local talent. Audiences can look forward to a performance by Gabriel Ducatenzeiler on January 24 at the Auditorium of Antigua. At just 23 years old, this pianist has already garnered several awards and is recognized for his versatility and virtuosity, making him one of the most promising artists from the islands.

Other highlights include Il Giardino d’Amore’s concert on January 31, presenting a rich tapestry of German, Italian, and French baroque music under the direction of violinist Stefan Plewniak. The festival culminates on February 7 with soprano Raquel Lojendio, joined by pianist Chiky Martín, inviting audiences to embark on a delightful musical journey across the Atlantic with a program titled Cantos de dos mundos, which encompasses works from luminaries such as Falla and Villa-Lobos.

Flexible Ticketing Options

In an effort to enhance accessibility, the Government of the Canary Islands, in collaboration with local councils, has introduced a subscription package for the festival. This package consolidates tickets for multiple concerts, offering attendees a more affordable way to immerse themselves in the rich offerings of the festival. These subscriptions cover the six concerts scheduled at the Palace of Training and Congresses and are available at a special rate.

For those keen on experiencing the magic of classical music in the stunning landscapes of Fuerteventura, this festival is not to be missed. With its stellar lineup and commitment to showcasing both established and emerging talents, the 42nd FIMC promises to deliver unforgettable performances, celebrating the joy of music in a picturesque setting.
