Reviving Heritage: The II Muestra del Ganado in Los Lajares

The heart of the majorero culture and its agricultural traditions will be beautifully showcased at the II Muestra del Ganado en Los Lajares on Sunday, June 14. Following the triumphant success of its inaugural edition, this event is set within the vibrant framework of the Fiestas in honor of San Antonio de Padua, organized by the La Oliva City Council, specifically through the efforts of the Primary Sector Department led by Rubén González.

Celebrating Local Traditions

This initiative has emerged from a collaborative dream of the local festival committee and the dedicated livestock farmers of the area. Its primary aim is to offer a platform for the dissemination of the rich customs that define the majorero community, particularly highlighting the vital contributions made by local ranchers. Their hard work plays a crucial role in nurturing the primary sector in La Oliva, which is pivotal in sustaining the local economy and preserving cultural identity.

A Day for All

On this special day, locals and visitors alike are invited to participate in festivities that will be held from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM in a picturesque setting adjacent to the historic Plaza Vieja. With livestock taking center stage, attendees can expect to enjoy various activities geared towards all age groups. A standout feature will be an agricultural market where local farmers will proudly showcase their produce, providing an opportunity for the community to support and appreciate local agricultural endeavors.

In addition to this market, the event promises a rich tapestry of activities, including displays of vintage tractors and classic cars, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the agricultural past of the region. Furthermore, traditional games like the juego del palo will add cultural flair, while entertainment will come in the form of performances by well-known local humorist Matías Alonso, alongside musical acts from Parranderos del Norte and Orquesta Jacomar, ensuring the ambiance remains lively and engaging throughout the day.

Preserving Identity and Tradition

Mayor Isaí Blanco underscores the significance of fostering the local traditions of the majorero community. He emphasizes, “It is vital to continue putting our efforts into showcasing our customs, our identity, and the evolution of the primary sector throughout our municipality’s history, to ensure that this knowledge is preserved and transmitted to future generations.” This sentiment reflects the communal spirit of La Oliva, where preserving heritage is viewed as a collective responsibility.

A Focus on Livestock Farming

In his contributions, Rubén González elaborates on the purpose of this event, stating that the focus on livestock is intended to highlight the crucial role that ranchers have played historically in shaping the community. “The Muestra de Ganado serves as a space for coexistence within the sector, promoting and making known the hard work and dedication present in the Primary Sector to this day.” Such recognition fosters a deeper appreciation for the farmers’ efforts and aims to inspire pride in local agricultural practices.

Commitment to Future Generations

The II Muestra del Ganado is not just an event; it’s a manifestation of the local government’s commitment to supporting and promoting activities that educate the public about the primary sector. This initiative is designed to resonate particularly with younger generations, ensuring that the essence and identity of the majorero people are presented in a relatable and enjoyable manner.

As the celebration approaches, the anticipation in the air grows, calling upon everyone to partake in this unique opportunity to connect with the heritage of La Oliva. The event promises not just to celebrate but to educate and inspire, weaving the past into the very fabric of today’s community life.
