PARIS, France, June 10 (AFP): The excitement surrounding women’s football reached new heights as world champions Spain and France secured their spots for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. However, the journey was bittersweet for England, who, despite a solid victory over Ukraine, fell short of automatic qualification.

Spain showcased their dominance in the qualifying rounds with a resounding 6-1 victory against Iceland in Reykjavik. Young star Vicky Lopez was a standout performer, netting two goals, while Edna Imade, Salma Paralluelo, Claudia Pina, and Aitana Bonmati also contributed to the scoreline. This emphatic win not only secured Spain’s first-place finish in qualifying group A3 but also highlighted their status as a formidable force in women’s football.

On the other hand, France continued their impressive run by clinching a 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland, thanks to Melvine Malard’s solitary goal. This win marked France’s fifth consecutive World Cup qualification, underscoring their consistency and strength in the European football landscape. The match was particularly tense, as France had to navigate the final minutes with ten players after Thiniba Samoura received a second yellow card.

Meanwhile, England’s journey took a more complicated turn. Despite a convincing 3-0 win against Ukraine, they finished second in their qualifying group, which means they will have to face the uncertainty of play-offs to secure their place in Brazil. The match at Everton’s stadium saw defender Jess Carter open the scoring, followed by Georgia Stanway doubling the lead before halftime. Although Ukraine attempted a comeback in the second half, Beth Mead’s goal sealed the deal for England, marking her 40th international goal.

In the same group, Iceland’s Linda Boama managed to score a goal, ensuring that they would also enter the play-offs after finishing third. This outcome was particularly disappointing for England, as they needed Spain to either lose or draw against Iceland to automatically qualify. The stakes were high, and the pressure was palpable as the teams fought for their World Cup dreams.

As the qualifying rounds come to a close, the focus now shifts to the play-offs, where England and Iceland will aim to secure their spots in the prestigious tournament. The excitement surrounding the Women’s World Cup continues to build, with fans eagerly anticipating the thrilling matches that lie ahead.
