Major Budgetary Shift for Water Infrastructure in the Canary Islands
On Monday, the Canary Islands Government Council made a significant move by approving a budget modification that allocates €4.4 million to three vital hydraulic projects across various islands. This financial boost aims to enhance the water supply and management systems, improving the quality of life for residents and businesses alike.
Projects on the Horizon
The three projects benefiting from this funding include the water supply for La Graciosa, the channeling of the Vallehermoso ravine in La Gomera, and the sanitation upgrades in El Cotillo, a town in Fuerteventura. Each project plays a crucial role in addressing the unique challenges faced by these communities, ensuring that they meet modern infrastructural demands.
The Importance of Water Management
Manuel Miranda, the Counselor for Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion, and Water, emphasized the necessity of these initiatives in a recent statement. He noted that they are foundational improvements for the water cycle across the islands. Improved water management is not just about meeting immediate needs; it’s about creating sustainable systems that can adapt to future challenges.
La Graciosa: Vital Supply Enhancements
A significant portion of the newly allocated funds—€2.3 million—will be directed toward renewing the water supply pipeline for La Graciosa. This project has been a focus since the government’s current mandate began, with recognition of its importance classified as a matter of general interest back in January 2025. The project encounters unique challenges since it is being executed on a protected natural site, leading to a lengthy and complex approval process.
Vallehermoso: Enhancing Safety and Public Spaces
The second key project involves the channeling of Vallehermoso ravine and carries a total budget of €4.1 million. With €2.7 million already allocated in this year’s budget, the additional funding will help meet the long-standing demands of both residents and local businesses. This initiative is aimed at bolstering safety in the area while also creating new public spaces that can benefit the community.
El Cotillo: Modernizing Sanitation and Wastewater Management
The final project is centered on improving sanitation and wastewater management systems in El Cotillo. Given the recent growth in its population, updating these hydraulic infrastructures is essential. The project, which is already underway, involves a comprehensive strategy to adapt both the sanitation and depuration systems to meet the evolving requirements of this vibrant community.
The total investment needed for this project exceeds €3 million, with an upcoming need for €1.9 million in 2026. The government has approved an additional €712,577 to bolster the previously set €1.2 million allocated for 2026, ensuring that progress continues smoothly.
Financial Repercussions and Future Implications
The recent budget modification reflects a proactive approach to infrastructure and public service enhancement. By securing financial backing for these crucial projects, the government is affirming its commitment to creating resilient and responsive systems that serve the diverse needs of its islanders.
These initiatives not only aim to secure immediate benefits but also lay the foundation for sustainable development, ensuring that the Canary Islands remain a thriving destination for both residents and visitors alike.
