Volga: The Rising Force in Spain’s Metallic Hardcore Scene

The metallic hardcore scene in Spain is experiencing a renaissance, and one of the bands at the forefront of this movement is Volga, hailing from Vega Baja del Segura. Their sound is a powerful blend of influences, drawing from the relentless energy of Belgium’s H8000 scene and the atmospheric depth of the Church of Ra collective.

Formation and Early Challenges

Volga was formed in October 2019, but their journey was quickly interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Drummer Julián Egea reflects on those early days: “From the original lineup, only Benja (guitar) and I remain today. The early days were quite difficult, as the pandemic hit shortly after we started, making it very hard for the project to develop normally.” Despite these setbacks, the band released a self-titled debut EP, solidifying their presence in the scene before finalizing their current lineup, which includes Mario on guitar, David on bass, and Juanqui on vocals.

Musical Influences and Evolution

Volga’s sound is rooted in the H8000 foundation, but they are not afraid to push boundaries. Egea describes their music as sitting “somewhere between metalcore and metallic hardcore,” combining the aggression of hardcore with heavy riffs and structures reminiscent of extreme metal.

“The H8000 sound is definitely a major influence on our music. We’re drawn to the intensity, attitude, and overall approach those bands had toward hardcore,” Egea explains. Influences include iconic bands like Arkangel, Congress, Merauder, and Hatebreed.

Recently, Volga has also embraced elements of modern death metal, which can be heard in their more aggressive riffing and heavier sections. Egea notes, “We try to combine the darkness and violence of death metal with the energy and attitude that define hardcore.”

Latest Release: Mártir

Their latest album, Mártir, is a testament to their evolution. Comprising nine tracks, it showcases a heavier and more aggressive sound, reflecting the band’s growth with the current lineup. Egea describes it as a transitional stage, emphasizing the importance of the atmosphere, concepts, and lyrics that define their identity.

Thematic Depth

Volga’s work is not just about the music; it carries a deeper message. Egea explains, “Much of our inspiration comes from the world around us and the feeling that we are living in an increasingly hostile, contradictory, and difficult time to understand.” The imagery in their work often features the sun, symbolizing life and energy, but with a twist. Instead of a nurturing presence, the sun represents an oppressive force that distorts perception and drives people toward their worst impulses.

The Spanish Metallic Hardcore Scene

As Volga has evolved, so has Spain’s metallic hardcore scene. Egea believes that “Spanish metallic hardcore is currently experiencing one of its strongest moments in years.” The pandemic has sparked a resurgence, with bands like Faced Out, Decadence, Fractura, and Eight Ounces pushing the scene forward.

Promoters, collectives, and independent labels play a crucial role in sustaining this underground movement. Organizations such as Málaga Hardcore, Almería Noise, and Carcossa Records are vital in organizing shows and connecting bands, fostering a community driven by passion and collective effort.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite the positive outlook, Volga faces practical challenges typical of DIY bands. Egea notes, “Venues are becoming more expensive, offer fewer resources, and in many cases, it can be difficult for smaller bands to access certain circuits without going through established promoters.” Nevertheless, the band remains optimistic about their future.

Currently, Volga is focused on releasing Mártir in a physical format. Egea shares, “We’re speaking with different labels, finalizing the artwork, and developing new merchandise connected to the record.” They are also planning a tour across the Iberian Peninsula, with aspirations to reach the rest of Europe.
