Europe Tourism Insights 2026: Spain Remains the Top Destination, While Czechia Sees Rapid Growth

Europe: The Unstoppable Travel Destination of 2026

Despite soaring flight prices and the rising costs of a pint in many European cities, travelers are undeterred. The allure of Europe remains irresistible, as evidenced by the latest data from Amadeus Travel Intelligence and UN Tourism. Their recent report reveals that Europe continues to reign supreme as the world’s favorite holiday destination.

A Surge in Tourist Numbers

From May 2025 to April 2026, Europe welcomed an astonishing 130 million international tourists in just the first three months of 2026. This marks a notable four percent increase compared to the previous year. If your recent Euro-trip felt a bit more crowded, you were certainly not imagining it!

Spain: The Crown Jewel of Europe

Spain has once again claimed its title as the most searched-for and booked destination in Europe. Alongside the United States and Germany, Spain forms a triumvirate of major travel markets during the bustling April-to-September holiday season. The country is on track to welcome approximately 100 million international visitors in 2026—a staggering figure when you consider that Spain’s population is only about 48 million. This means that, for every local, there are nearly two tourists eager to indulge in tapas and bask in the sunshine.

Czechia: The Rising Star

While Spain may be the most popular, it’s Czechia that is experiencing the fastest growth in tourism. The country has seen an impressive 18 percent increase in bookings compared to last year. Iceland is not far behind, boasting an 11 percent rise, while Denmark is also making waves as travelers increasingly opt for city breaks and nature-filled adventures in Northern and Central Europe.

Who’s Traveling to Europe?

Japanese tourists are leading the charge, with a remarkable 19 percent increase in bookings, making them the fastest-growing market for European travel. Travelers from Denmark and Egypt are also showing a keen interest in exploring the continent. Interestingly, the demographic of travelers is shifting; the biggest spenders are now aged between 46 and 65, accounting for nearly a third of all travel demand. This trend is particularly pronounced in popular cities like London, Paris, and Madrid.
