As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, improvements in healthcare infrastructure are essential to support its growing population and boost quality of life.
The Minister of Health for the Canary Islands, Esther Monzón, recently visited the General Hospital of Fuerteventura to assess initiatives aimed at enhancing the facility’s healthcare capabilities and overall service quality.
These enhancements are part of a comprehensive investment plan by the Canarian Health Service, totaling over €1.3 million. Key projects include the establishment of a Home Hospitalization Unit, modernization of the Sterilization Service, and the creation of new spaces to increase the hospital’s capacity.
During her visit, Monzón toured the site of a new two-level annex designed to expand the hospital’s footprint by over 500 square meters. This annex will feature an elevator connecting the parking lot to the Emergency area, improving accessibility, particularly for individuals with reduced mobility.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, Fuerteventura’s healthcare workforce has also seen significant expansion. Since the start of the current legislative term, 66 new healthcare professionals have been hired, including nearly half who are specialized doctors. This reinforcement has already contributed to a more efficient healthcare system, evident in a 15% reduction in surgical waiting lists and a decrease in average waiting times for procedures, down from 80 to 53 days.
The visit also highlighted other ongoing health projects on the island, including plans for the Specialized Care Center (CAE) in La Lajita and the introduction of a medical helicopter dedicated to the island, which will enhance emergency medical transport services.
These initiatives align with the Canary Islands Government’s strategy to strengthen public health resources in non-capital areas, ensuring that healthcare services adapt to population growth and meet the unique needs of each island.
