Lola García Calls for Exemption of Islands from Airport Tax Hike

As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, local leaders emphasize the need for strategic infrastructure planning.

Lola García, the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, has advocated for the islands to be exempt from AENA’s recently announced increase in airport taxes, arguing that such changes could hinder the islands’ economic and social development.

While García acknowledges the positive impact of AENA’s substantial investment plan for Spanish airports, which includes allocations for the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura, she stresses that these financial commitments should not come with increased taxes. Given that air transport is vital for the region’s mobility, she insists that tax hikes would be detrimental.

García highlights the importance of considering the unique circumstances of the Canary Islands as an outermost region. She calls for a more inclusive approach from supra-island administrations, emphasizing that decisions affecting crucial infrastructure must reflect the reality of local needs.

To address these issues, García underscores the necessity of effective co-management of the airport network, as mandated by the islands’ Statute of Autonomy. She argues that this management is not merely a preference but a recognized right, directly linked to the future viability of the islands. Additionally, she supports a decree from the regional government that seeks representation for the Canary Islands on AENA’s Board of Directors, ensuring local interests are well-represented in critical planning and operations.
