Unlocking Potential: Fuerteventura’s Path to Sustainable Growth

The Rise of Sustainable Tourism: Fuerteventura’s Path to a Greener Economy
Embracing eco-friendly initiatives could redefine Fuerteventura’s tourism landscape and boost local businesses.

As the world increasingly prioritizes sustainability, Fuerteventura is strategically positioning itself to become a leader in eco-tourism. The island, known for its pristine beaches and natural beauty, is now harnessing its resources to attract environmentally conscious travelers. Local businesses are being encouraged to adopt greener practices, appealing to tourists who seek authentic experiences that do not compromise the environment.

In recent months, several initiatives have been introduced to support this transformation. From eco-friendly accommodations to local markets showcasing organic produce, Fuerteventura is witnessing a burgeoning movement that aligns with global trends in sustainable travel. These efforts are not merely an environmental obligation; they present a significant business opportunity. By tapping into the growing demand for eco-conscious travel options, local enterprises can enhance their revenue while contributing to the preservation of the island’s unique ecosystems.

The potential for economic growth in conjunction with sustainable practices is vast. As visitors increasingly seek to engage with nature responsibly, Fuerteventura has the chance to develop a robust eco-tourism sector. This shift not only protects the island’s natural resources but also cultivates a sense of community among local businesses geared toward sustainability. In harnessing this momentum, Fuerteventura is well on its way to becoming a benchmark for other destinations looking to embrace similar transformations.

Canarias Stratoport for HAPS&UAS, strategic infrastructure of the Fuerteventura Technology Park, dependent on the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, has achieved the first simultaneous flight in Europe of a stratospheric balloon (HAB) and a high altitude platform (HAPS) in an operation coordinated with Telespazio Ibérica. The German group TAO (Trans Atmospheric Operations) carried out its first stratospheric operation from the Canary Islands Stratoport for HAPS&UAS facilities by launching a stratospheric balloon that reached 25,000 meters of altitude. In the following days, a joint operation was carried out between TAO Group’s stratospheric balloon and Space42’s APUSNEO 18 platform, both operated by CATEC (Advanced Center for Aerospace Technologies), achieving for the first time in Europe the simultaneous and coordinated flight of both platforms. Lola García, president of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, highlights the capacity of the ISSEC Center and the Canary Islands Stratoport for HAPS&UAS facilities to develop public service missions through unmanned aerial systems and high-altitude platforms, demonstrating the role of the Technology Park as a tractor focus. Sergio Díaz, manager of the Fuerteventura Technology Park, highlighted that “these milestones reinforce the positioning of the Canarias Stratoport for HAPS&UAS in Fuerteventura as a strategic infrastructure for the experimentation, integration and validation of advanced aerospace technologies, while highlighting the potential of our country to host and develop highly complex stratospheric missions, consolidating Fuerteventura as a reference enclave in the aerospace sector.” For Carlos Fernández de la Peña, CEO of Telespazio Ibérica, “this new milestone shows that Spain is developing increasingly advanced capabilities to integrate stratospheric platforms in the surveillance and protection of the territory. The objective is to go beyond the technological demonstration and combine stratospheric, terrestrial and space means to obtain useful information that helps anticipate, monitor and manage forest fires. Each campaign brings us closer to operational services capable of improving emergency response and the protection of people and the territory.” Fuerteventura consolidates its capabilities for future stratospheric operations The flight of the TAO Group stratospheric balloon took place during the early hours of Sunday, October 4, and lasted approximately two and a half hours. During the mission, electro-optical and infrared cameras were used to capture images, which were transmitted directly to the GIC (Geo Information Center) of the Fuerteventura Technology Park. The subsequent simultaneous operation tested coordination between platforms. The two took off in the early hours of Wednesday, October 7. Space42’s HAPS did so around 00:20 Canary time and, once reaching the positioning area and the safety conditions were verified, the TAO free flight balloon took off around 1:10, maintaining the necessary distance between both platforms. During takeoff and subsequent phases of the flight, the teams of both companies maintained constant communication and close coordination with the aim of guaranteeing a quick and effective response to any possible incident. The campaign has been possible thanks to the coordination between the Fuerteventura Technology Park, the UTE Telespazio Ibérica-Pegasus Aero Group, TAO Group and Space42, the Advanced Center for Aerospace Technologies (CATEC), and the organizations and entities involved in the operations, among which the State Aviation Safety Agency (AESA), ENAIRE, SAERCO and AENA, among others, stand out. About ISSEC and the Fuerteventura Technology Park This action is part of ISSEC, a project framed in the Canary Islands Geo Innovation 2030, aimed at the creation of innovative solutions through the use of aeronautical and aerospace platforms and technologies applied to areas such as security, emergencies, biodiversity and other public services. The project is managed by the Fuerteventura Technology Park, an entity dependent on the Island Council of Fuerteventura, and its activities are carried out mainly in the facilities of the ISSEC Center and the Canary Islands Stratoport for HAPS&UAS, infrastructures designed to facilitate the experimentation, demonstration and validation of advanced technological solutions in real operating conditions. This initiative is part of the “Biodiversity” project, financed with regional funds provided by the Government of the Canary Islands, as well as with European NextGenerationEU funds, through the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR), within the framework of Component 17 of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) of the Government of Spain. About Telespazio Ibérica Telespazio Ibérica is the Spanish subsidiary of Telespazio, a joint venture between Leonardo and Thales, one of the main world operators of satellite services. The company is a leader in our country in the field of geoinformation and satellite navigation, being a reference in the sector with 40 years of experience in these fields. It is at the forefront in other sectors such as the design and development of space systems to the management of launch services and control of satellites in orbit. Likewise, it stands out in Earth observation services, communications, navigation and satellite tracking and scientific programs, with a strong vocation focused on transferring these services to citizens.
