Exploring the Nomadic Museum of Photography: A Journey Through Time and Image
La Casa de la Cultura in Puerto del Rosario is set to welcome a fascinating exhibition entitled “Museo Nómada de la Fotografía. El íntimo secreto de la forma” starting March 13, 2026. This cultural initiative, organized in collaboration with the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, invites visitors to dive deep into the evolution of photography while reflecting on its significance as historical, artistic, and cultural testimony.
Exhibition Details: A Milestone Event
The exhibition will be inaugurated on the evening of March 13 at 8:00 PM and will remain accessible until April 30, 2026. Notably, this marks the first time the Nomadic Museum of Photography is presented outside the island of Tenerife, where it typically operates. This occasion represents a cultural expansion and a unique opportunity for the local community to engage with the rich tapestry of photographic history.
A Flexible Space for Art and History
The Nomadic Museum of Photography is conceived as an open and flexible space that collects diverse materials from several realms of photographic research and collecting. It aims to provide a critical and pluralistic view of photography over the past two centuries. The exhibition will reveal how imagery has documented and accompanied societal evolution, showcasing the interplay between art and history.
Structure of the Exhibition: Four Narratives
The exhibition is organized into four major sections, each allowing visitors to explore various moments and interpretations of photography:
-
Historic Cameras: This section features an impressive selection of cameras from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, illustrating the technological advancements that revolutionized image-making.
-
Stereoscopic Views: Attendees will be treated to a captivating exploration of stereoscopic visions and three-dimensional imagery, a hallmark of early photographic innovation.
-
Portrait Collections: A collection of studio portraits dating from 1850 to the early decades of the 20th century will showcase the evolution of personal depiction and the significance of the individual in art.
-
Touristic Imaginaries: This segment focuses on postcards and photobooks published between 1960 and 1980, illustrating how these works helped shape Fuerteventura’s identity as a tourist destination.
Engaging Parallel Activities
To enrich the visitor experience, the exhibition will include several parallel activities open to the public. Notably, an inaugural conference titled “Íntimo secreto de las formas fotográficas,” led by Carmelo Vega, Professor of Art History at the University of La Laguna, will take place on March 13 at 7:00 PM. This talk promises to set the stage for a deeper understanding of the photographs displayed.
Additionally, on March 18, a workshop on historical cyanotype techniques will be hosted by collector and educator José María Mercader Torreiro. This hands-on workshop is particularly designed for older adults, in collaboration with the Senior Center of Puerto del Rosario, highlighting the museum’s commitment to community engagement and learning.
The Inspiration Behind the Exhibition
The title of this exhibition draws inspiration from the reflections of writer Miguel de Unamuno during his stay in Fuerteventura. He spoke of the necessity to learn how to uncover “the intimate secret of forms” to grasp the essence of landscapes and the island itself. This idea resonates deeply with the spirit of the exhibition, encouraging viewers to take their time, observe with curiosity, and rediscover history through the lens of photography.
This exploration is not just a walk through a gallery; it’s an invitation to engage with the stories that images tell and the transformations they witness. The exhibition promises to be an enriching journey, where art and history intertwine, reflecting the changing nature of both society and the medium of photography itself.
