The Kites Are Already Flying in El Cotillo

The 38th International Kite Festival in Corralejo: A Colorful Celebration in Fuerteventura

As the sun shone brightly over the stunning landscapes of Fuerteventura, La Playa de La Concha in El Cotillo became the backdrop for the first day of the 38th International Kite Festival in Corralejo. Kite enthusiasts from all corners of Europe have gathered here, showcasing their creativity and passion against a perfect canvas of blue skies.

A Vibrant Gathering of Kite Flyers

More than 200 kite flyers, known as “cometistas,” have arrived in La Oliva to participate in this highly anticipated event. The winds were favorable, with gusts reaching up to 35 kilometers per hour, allowing an impressive array of kites to take flight. From vibrant fish-shaped kites to colorful spirals measuring over 15 meters in length, the skies were transformed into a spectacular display.

The scenic Playa de La Concha served as the ideal location for the festival’s kickoff. With mild temperatures and a crystal-clear breeze, the atmosphere was festive and lively as families and visitors marveled at the acrobatic performances above.

Local Leaders Embrace the Festivities

Attending the festival were notable figures, including the mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, along with council members dedicated to tourism and environmental sustainability. They expressed their enthusiasm for the event, recognizing its potential to attract tourists and showcase the natural beauty of the island during the colder months of Europe.

Mayor Isaí Blanco remarked on the growing participation, stating, “Each year we take a step further, representing not just La Oliva and Fuerteventura, but all of the Canary Islands. While much of Europe faces winter chill, we offer an image of blue skies and the sea, solidifying our position as a winter destination.”

Environmental Considerations Take Center Stage

An important theme at the festival is the commitment to environmental respect. David Fajardo, the councilor for tourism and environment, emphasized that the festival incorporates environmental guides who inform attendees about the ecological significance of the Corralejo Dunes and promote sustainable practices. Features such as eco-sanitation facilities and transport shuttles help reduce the festival’s environmental impact and enhance the overall experience.

The festival also enjoyed the company of over a hundred students from CEIP El Tostón in La Oliva, who delighted in trying to catch the kites and admire the larger models soaring through the air.

What’s in Store for the Coming Days

The festival officially shifts to the grand beaches of Corralejo starting Friday, with activities set to kick off at 10:30 AM. Attendees can look forward to various kite flying exhibitions, including static and acrobatic performances, and exciting Rokaku kite battles. Workshops dedicated to environmental education, kite-making, and inflatable play areas for children will add to the excitement.

New this year is a rapid painting contest, alongside a gigantic inflatable puppet park that promises to be a delight for younger festival-goers.

As the sun sets, more spectacles await—Friday evening will feature a world premiere drone show titled “Horizonte abstracto,” where over 300 drones will light up the sky, marking the largest such event on the island to date. The festival’s entertainment lineup also includes tribute concerts, with the first night dedicated to the music of Coldplay, followed by a celebration of 25 years of Los Salvapantallas on Saturday.

A Collaborative Effort for an Unforgettable Experience

The 38th International Kite Festival in Corralejo is organized by the tourism council of La Oliva, with support from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands Government through Promotur Turismo Islas Canarias. Local businesses, including Binter and RIU Hotels and Resorts, also play key roles in bringing this vibrant event to life.

With over three days of fun, artistry, and community spirit, the festival promises to be an unforgettable experience for all who visit the beautiful shores of Fuerteventura. Whether a seasoned kite flyer or a curious onlooker, this celebration underscores the joy of creativity, environmental awareness, and the stunning natural beauty of the Canary Islands.
