Promoted by the Fuerteventura Primary Care Health Promotion Network (RedPSAP), this program aims to offer therapeutic support, training and practical tools to those who care for people in a situation of dependency, a key group for the maintenance of the social and health system. During the presentation event, held at the Day Center for Dependent Seniors in Puerto del Rosario, the trajectory of this project was highlighted, which in 2025 had the continued participation of fifteen caregivers in periodic sessions. The initiative is thus consolidated as an essential resource to improve the quality of life of those they care for, helping them manage stress, strengthen their resilience and maintain their personal balance. The director of the Fuerteventura Health Area, Tomás Pérez, highlighted the relevance of this type of programs: “It is essential to empower caregivers, providing them with resources that allow them to carry out their work effectively, while promoting an active and autonomous life for those who receive care.” Likewise, he highlighted the key role of Primary Care as a fundamental axis in health promotion and disease prevention. The program has the coordinated participation of multiple entities, including the Health Center of Puerto del Rosario, the Day Center for the Elderly of the Government of the Canary Islands, the City Council of Puerto del Rosario, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, the Canarian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SOCANGER) and the Association of Relatives of Patients with Alzheimer’s and other Dementia (AFFA), among others. This multidisciplinary collaboration allows us to offer comprehensive care adapted to the real needs of caregivers. For the 2026 edition, the program will expand its scope with a call aimed at a maximum of thirty participants. The sessions will take place in the afternoon at the Day Center for Dependent Seniors of Puerto del Rosario, maintaining a practical and participatory approach. The workshops will address key contents such as social care, basic health care at home, nutrition, emotional management, caregiver ergonomics and emergency response, including training in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The organization highlights that the limited number of places seeks to encourage active participation, the exchange of experiences and the creation of an environment of trust, also facilitating closer monitoring by professionals. With this new edition, the Fuerteventura Health Area reaffirms its commitment to caregivers, recognizing their essential role and betting on initiatives that contribute to their well-being and that of the people they care for.
