According to a press release from the organizing corporation, this year’s festival was marked by an “unprecedented success,” drawing visitors from near and far to experience a kaleidoscope of color against the backdrop of the island’s stunning landscapes.
A Colorful Extravaganza
Over the course of nearly a week, the skies over the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo transformed into a magnificent tapestry of flying kites. With around 80,000 visitors flocking to partake in various festivities, the festival reached unprecedented heights. Each day featured spectacular exhibitions showcasing nearly 1,000 kites, captivating the crowd with their intricate designs and choreography.
The visual feast drew kite enthusiasts and families alike, offering a unique experience where the sky was literally the limit. From whimsical shapes to expertly crafted masterpieces, these kites painted the air in a stunning array of colors, filling hearts with delight and awe.
Community Engagement: Schools and Seniors Get Involved
A hallmark of this year’s festival was its inclusive programming aimed at fostering community involvement. More than 700 schoolchildren, alongside numerous senior citizens from the municipality of La Oliva, participated in specially tailored activities designed for them.
Workshops and guided tours enriched the festival experience, with about 500 people participating. These educational offerings not only kept the spirit of the festival alive but also inspired a new generation of kite fliers and enthusiasts to explore this colorful art form.
A Dazzling Night of Drones
One of the standout additions to this year’s festival was the night drone show, which featured two captivating performances. These showcases illuminated the night sky, blending technology with creativity in a mesmerizing display that left attendees speechless. The response was overwhelming, with thousands of attendees gathering to witness the dazzling spectacle, further enhancing the festival’s appeal.
The Grand Finale: Competitive Spirit in the Air
The final day of the festival culminated at the breathtaking Grand Beaches, where the much-anticipated Rokaku kite battles took center stage. This exciting competition brought together kite fliers of all skill levels, providing a thrilling conclusion to the week-long celebration. As the battles concluded, a trophy ceremony was held, graced by the presence of David Fajardo, the Councilman for Tourism and Environment of La Oliva, who celebrated the accomplishments of the participants and the festival itself.
Collaboration and Community Support
The International Kite Festival of Corralejo wouldn’t be possible without the concerted efforts of various organizations. Organized by the Tourism Council of La Oliva, the festival received vital support from the Tourism Council of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Government of the Canary Islands through Promotur Turismo Canarias, funded by the REACT EU fund. Collaborations with local businesses, including Binter and RIU Hotels and Resorts, further showcased community commitment to promoting this extraordinary event.
In essence, the festival not only celebrated the artistry of kite flying but also reinforced community ties, fostered tourism, and created lasting memories for everyone involved.
By drawing thousands to this breathtaking landscape to witness the joy of flying kites, the International Kite Festival of Corralejo has cemented its place as a cherished tradition, promising even more excitement for years to come.
