Festival Magic in Fuerteventura: The XXXVII Festival Internacional de Cometas de Corralejo
Today marked a spectacular day at the XXXVII Festival Internacional de Cometas de Corralejo in Fuerteventura, where thousands flocked to the picturesque Grandes Playas. The event, renowned for its colorful display of kites soaring high above the stunning backdrop of the Corralejo Dunes, experienced a record attendance, thanks largely to the ideal weather conditions. With a perfect blend of sunlight and gentle winds, the stage was set for a feast of visual delight.
A Kaleidoscope of Kites
The skies above Fuerteventura were transformed into a vibrant tapestry of colors, with around 500 kites taking flight. This year’s festival attracted nearly 300 kite flyers from various corners of the globe—Brazil, Turkey, Sweden, England, and Germany—each bringing their unique designs and styles to share with the audience. The favorable wind conditions allowed even the largest kites to dance gracefully on the breeze, delighting spectators of all ages.
Among the standout attractions was an intricate 30-meter-long lizard kite, expertly handled by Liana, a kite enthusiast from Genoa. Proudly sharing her experience, she noted how the wind made controlling such a large creation a daunting yet exhilarating challenge. Following close behind in terms of size was a 15-by-7-meter fish kite, expertly flown by her fellow Italian kite flier, Salvatore, who echoed the excitement of the day.
The Atmosphere of Unity
The festival buzzed with life as families, tourists, and locals came together to witness this unique spectacle. Visitors found themselves not just spectators, but participants in a communal celebration of joy and creativity. British kite flyers Dave and Claire, seasoned attendees of this festival, spoke about their love for Corralejo and Fuerteventura, reminiscing about their travels with kites across places like the United States and India.
The sense of community was palpable, filled with laughter and excitement as kite enthusiasts exchanged stories, techniques, and tips while navigating their vibrant creations across the open sky.
Notable Guests and Insights
Jéssica de León, the Councilor of Tourism and Employment for the Government of the Canary Islands, visited the festival, marking one of its most successful days. She emphasized the unique opportunity the festival offers to showcase Fuerteventura’s stunning landscapes and favorable climate, particularly in November when many parts of Europe are bracing for winter.
Her words resonated with the spirit of the event, pointing out that such activities not only promote local tourism but also attract media attention worldwide. “The spectacular visuals alone make it a compelling end to any news broadcast,” she noted, showcasing the festival’s capacity to boost Fuerteventura’s profile beyond its shores.
Captivating Acrobatics
This year’s festival also showcased thrilling acrobatics, with synchronized flights from as many as 19 kites moving in harmony, a sight that left the audience astounded. The precision required for these performances demonstrates the skill of the flyers and the breathtaking spectacle that results from their teamwork.
Moreover, the atmosphere was charged with excitement as the first Rokaku battles took place. These spirited contests involved lightweight kites battling for supremacy in the sky—only one could claim victory by remaining aloft while the others were cut down.
Environmental Engagement and Workshops
A family-friendly addition to the festival included environmental workshops and kite-making sessions held right on the sandy beaches. Participants had the chance to engage in hands-on experiences, crafting their own kites under the sun, making the day not only enjoyable but also educational.
As the XXXVII Festival Internacional de Cometas continues until Sunday, it promises to deliver even more delightful moments under the vibrant skies of Fuerteventura. The festival, organized by the Tourism Department of La Oliva Town Hall with backing from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Government of the Canary Islands, showcases the commitment to promoting this beautiful region through cultural events that ignite passion and creativity among participants and visitors alike.
Amid the colorful spectacle and cheerful atmosphere, it’s clear that the festival is more than just a display of kites—it’s a celebration of community, culture, and the breathtaking beauty of Fuerteventura.
