Investing in Health: The New Corralejo II Health Center
The construction of the Corralejo II Health Center is on the brink of being awarded, with significant developments projected to unfold before the summer of 2026. This crucial announcement emerged from a collaborative meeting led by Lola García, the President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, alongside Esther Monzón, the Health Counselor for the Government of the Canary Islands. This engaging session also included key figures such as Tomás Pérez, the Director of the Insular Health Area, and representatives from local municipalities and various political groups within the Insular Corporation.
Meeting Growing Demands
The new health center is set to provide high-quality early medical care tailored to the island’s growing population. Garcia emphasized that the project represents a historic response to community health needs, acknowledging the synergy between the Cabildo, the Canary Government, local councils, and the health services of Fuerteventura. As part of this unified effort, a robust infrastructure plan is in place with an allocation of 3.4 million euros, aiming to enhance primary healthcare facilities across all municipalities on the island.
Prioritizing Healthcare Access
In addition to the Corralejo II Health Center, another pressing initiative is the development of the Emergency Care Center (CAE) in La Lajita. This project is currently in the process of being awarded, and its significance cannot be understated. Given Fuerteventura’s challenging geography, this facility will play a pivotal role in enhancing healthcare accessibility, especially in the southern regions of the island, where distances can be considerable.
Moreover, advancements in emergency medical services are also on the horizon, highlighted by the imminent arrival of a medical helicopter based in Fuerteventura, scheduled to start operations by the end of March. This service is expected to greatly improve inter-island medical transport, complementing existing services and responding to urgent healthcare needs.
Innovations in Patient Care
On a broader scale, the authorities recently visited the General Hospital of Fuerteventura, unveiling new services like the Home Hospitalization Unit (HADO). This innovative program has already catered to 13 patients, delivering medical and nursing care in the comfort of their homes, akin to being hospitalized. Such initiatives mark a significant shift towards patient-centered care, enhancing comfort and convenience for residents.
Strengthening Healthcare Workforce
Health Counselor Esther Monzón highlighted the ongoing efforts to strengthen the healthcare workforce in Fuerteventura. Since June 2023, a total of 66 new professionals have been gradually incorporated into the system, with half being specialist doctors. This enhancement has substantially bolstered the healthcare capabilities available to the island’s population. Monzón noted the direct impact on service delivery, evidenced by a 15% reduction in surgical waitlists and a decrease in the average waiting time for procedures—from 80 days down to 53.
Addressing Historical Health Needs
Monzón also underscored the importance of the CAE of La Lajita, which will address long-standing healthcare demands in Fuerteventura. This new specialized medical center aligns with the Canary Islands’ health strategy, aimed at decentralizing specialized medical services to improve public accessibility, particularly in the southern health zone.
Additionally, the emergence of a third medical helicopter for the archipelago, stationed in Fuerteventura, represents a monumental enhancement for urgent transportation services, benefiting not only Fuerteventura but also residents of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
