Mahán, el Gigante: A Magical Evening in Betancuria
Betancuria, a picturesque town nestled in the heart of Fuerteventura, once again transformed into a magical stage for the latest offering from the association Ópera Fuerteventura. The outdoor debut of Mahán, el gigante drew an eager crowd eager to experience this lyrical tale, a change from past performances traditionally held at the convent of Buenaventura.
Celebrating a Decade of Lyrical Festivity
This performance represents the second installment of the Leyendas de Fuerteventura cycle, curated to celebrate local folklore and culture. Inspired by the legend of Mahán, a giant with a golden heart and immense strength, this production also marked a significant milestone—the tenth anniversary of Fuerteventura’s first lyrical festival initiated by Ópera Fuerteventura. This anniversary provided a fitting backdrop for an enchanting narrative steeped in local history.
The Cast and Their Roles
The titular character, Mahán, was brought to life by the resonant voice of bass Dani Dávid. Completing the cast were Alfonso Baruque as Ayoze, Jorge Tello portraying Jean de Bethencourt, and Carlos Lozano as Althay. They conjured images of Fuerteventura during the era of conquest in the 15th century, reminding the audience of the island’s rich historical tapestry. The wise Tibiabín and Tamonante were also highlighted, further embedding the performance in local lore.
A Community Effort
The event witnessed a stellar turnout, with Jonathan Suárez, the president of Ópera Fuerteventura, emphasizing in the program that “Betancuria is the cradle of dreams and resistance; it teaches us that the past is very much alive.” Seating quickly filled, and many audience members stood, captivated by the spectacle despite the cool evening breeze, their applause warming the atmosphere.
Among the performers were numerous young volunteers who embodied the spirit of the majorero people of that time, showcasing their talent under the guidance of artistic director José Concepción. The Orquesta Sinfónica de Fuerteventura, conducted by Tulio Gagliardo, provided an impeccable musical backdrop that breathed life into Igor Escudero’s composition.
Technical Brilliance
Production efforts were meticulously handled by Ópera Fuerteventura. Costumes curated by María Hernández and Justi transformed the performers, while makeup artists Ana Cristina Hernández and María Concepción completed their stunning looks. A combination of strategic lighting and carefully managed sound by companies such as Mejor con Arte and Maraudio helped transform the Betancuria caravan parking area into a breathtaking operatic venue.
An Unforgettable Experience
Guests described the event as “unique” and “historic,” showcasing the cultural significance of this presentation. Unlike many similar events worldwide that would come with a hefty price tag, this festival was offered free of charge, including transportation and a welcome cocktail—a true gift from the community.
This significant occasion was made possible through the diligent efforts of Ópera Fuerteventura and the collaborative support from various organizations, including the Government of the Canary Islands, the Fuerteventura Tourism Board, the Betancuria Town Hall, and several private sponsors like Era de la Corte, Nortysur, Ecorom, and Club Deportivo Guaboren.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The event attracted notable figures, such as the Mayor of Betancuria, Enrique Cerdeña; the regional Vice-Minister of Culture and Heritage, Horacio Umpiérrez; the island president Lola García; and Tourism Minister Marlene Figueroa. Their presence underscored the importance of cultural initiatives to the region, highlighting how arts can bridge communities and celebrate heritage.
As the evening unfolded, it became clear that Mahán, el gigante was more than just a performance; it was a powerful celebration of artistry, community, and the indomitable spirit of Fuerteventura’s history.
