The 36th Insular Craft Fair of Fuerteventura: A Celebration of Artisanship and Culture
A Symbolic Opening
On May 1st, the picturesque town of Antigua became a vibrant focal point for culture enthusiasts as it hosted the ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the 36th edition of the Insular Craft Fair of Fuerteventura. Attended by local dignitaries, including mayor Matías Peña, Nereida Brito from the Mafasca Collective, and Cabildo president Lola García, the festival marks an annual celebration of craftsmanship and creativity in the Canary Islands. This year, the event gathered 180 artisans from all corners of the Canaries, making it a must-attend for art lovers and tourists alike.

Festivities in Full Swing
Following the formal opening, attendees were treated to a delightful performance by the Quinteto de Viento Madera from the Music and Dance School of Pájara. This musical interlude set a joyous tone for the festivities. Mayor Peña expressed gratitude for the diverse craftsmanship represented at the fair, specifically acknowledging artisan Bianca Scarpari, the recipient of the prestigious Insular Craft Award. Such recognitions highlight the dedication and talent within the local artisan community.
Getting Involved
Nereida Brito, passionate about nurturing local crafts, encouraged visitors to engage with the fair fully. She emphasized the importance of supporting artisans by shopping and participating in engaging workshops—such as clay modeling, macramé, and textile decoration. In her remarks, President García underscored the financial commitment of the Cabildo, which has doubled its contributions this year to ensure the fair’s continued success and to spotlight local identity and talent.

This year’s craft fair features over 30 distinct trades, showcasing the richness of Canary Island craftsmanship. In addition, a Food Market has been introduced, offering locally-sourced “kilometer zero” products, further fostering a sense of community and sustainability. With an extensive range of activities scheduled throughout the event, attendees can immerse themselves in the full breadth of cultural expression that the fair represents.
