Sport and Tourism as Catalysts for Change: Supporting the Spanish Association Against Cancer in Fuerteventura

In a beautiful demonstration of community spirit and the power of sport, the town of La Oliva is set to host a remarkable event on the weekend of October 11 and 12. The paddle tennis charity tournament, organized by the Department of Sports, led by Gleiber Carreño, in collaboration with the Tourism Department under David Fajardo, aims to raise funds to support the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC) in Fuerteventura. This initiative underscores the vital role that sports and tourism can play in driving social change and providing assistance to affected families facing cancer.

A Sportive Weekend with a Purpose

Attendees can expect an engaging weekend filled not only with exciting matches for the tournament’s podium but also with heartfelt acts of generosity. The charity auction scheduled for October 11 at 2:30 PM at Las Marismas restaurant in El Cotillo will serve as a significant highlight. The event will be graced by the presence of the esteemed journalist Cristina Bea, who will act as the event’s ambassador, guiding the proceedings and reinforcing the event’s emotional weight.

A Treasure Trove of Auction Items

The charity auction promises a plethora of remarkable items, making it a paradise for sports enthusiasts and collectors alike. Highlights include two signed outfits by paddle star Marta Merrero and a jersey signed by world-famous player Fernando Belasteguin. Football fans will not want to miss out on jerseys from legends such as Carles Puyol of FC Barcelona, Guti of Real Madrid, and Agustín Tapia, to name just a few. The auction also includes boots signed by Andrea Falcón and a jersey by Sergio Gómez from Manchester City, showcasing the diversity and quality of sports memorabilia available for bidding.

Other interesting items include jerseys from Atlético Madrid, Elche CF, Sevilla FC, and a jersey worn by Laia Aleixandri during the Euro Cup match against Belgium. Additionally, paddle tennis enthusiasts will find two paddles signed by former world number one Maxi Sánchez, enhancing the appeal of the auction.

The Message of Solidarity

The mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, has emphasized the event’s primary focus on solidarity. He encourages everyone to join in on this pivotal occasion: “The true protagonist of the paddle tournament is, beyond the sport itself, the charitable aspect of this event. We invite everyone to take part in this gathering, which not only reinforces our commitment to sports tourism but also shows our unwavering support for the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer in Fuerteventura.”

For the Department of Sports, Gleiber Carreño voices his enthusiasm, stating, “We feel privileged to welcome high-level athletes and media for this initiative that is deeply rooted in solidarity. Additionally, this event aligns with our government’s strategy to promote the municipality as a leading destination for sports tourism in Spain, highlighting physical activity as a key facet of our community.”

Promotion of Sustainable Tourism

David Fajardo, the Tourism Councillor, notes, “We take immense pride in saying that, in this instance, tourism can showcase support for a noble cause like the daily work accomplished by the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer in Fuerteventura. This event elevates La Oliva as a premier sports tourism destination, moving away from traditional mass tourism toward a model that respects and cherishes our natural environment. We also extend our gratitude to Hotel Coral Beach in El Cotillo for generously providing their facilities for this remarkable gathering.”

Join the Cause

Local government leaders warmly invite both residents and visitors to attend not only the thrilling paddle tournament but also to actively participate in the charity lunch on October 11. This is an excellent opportunity to stand in solidarity with the significant work being done by the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer in Fuerteventura, making a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by cancer in the community.

As sport and tourism come together in this philanthropic venture, it becomes clear that community support and active participation have the power to spur meaningful change. Through such collaborations, Fuerteventura’s spirit of camaraderie shines brightly, pushing forward the fight against cancer while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
