New Health Clinic Opens in El Cotillo: A Vital Step for Local Residents
The residents of El Cotillo and El Roque can breathe a sigh of relief as the newly established Local Clinic opens its doors on Tuesday, August 12. This eagerly awaited service represents a significant collaboration between the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva and the Servicio Canario de la Salud (SCS), addressing a longstanding demand for improved healthcare in the area.
Addressing Historical Demands
For years, the residents of El Cotillo and El Roque have expressed their need for more accessible healthcare services. This new clinic aims to meet that demand by bringing Primary Healthcare closer to home. By alleviating pressure from the already busy Centro de Salud in Corralejo and the consultorios in La Oliva and Lajares, the clinic seeks to provide timely and efficient medical care.
A Well-Equipped Facility
Located temporarily at a municipal space on Avenida de Los Lagos, the clinic spans a welcoming 160 square meters. It is carefully designed to cater to a variety of healthcare needs and features:
- Family Medicine Consultation Room
- Nursing Consultation Room
- Administrative Area
- Treatment Room
- Storage Space
To ensure quality care, the initial staff comprises a family doctor, a nurse, and an administrative assistant, ready to serve the health needs of the community.
Serving a Growing Population
This new healthcare resource will directly benefit approximately 1,200 patients from El Cotillo and El Roque, integrating them into the Zona Básica de Salud de La Oliva, which is home to nearly 26,000 health cards. With better access to medical services, residents can expect more personalized and timely attention, while future plans for securing land and constructing a permanent clinic continue to progress.
A Strategic Initiative for Health Decentralization
The establishment of the Local Clinic is part of a broader strategy aimed at decentralizing health services across Fuerteventura, a response to the island’s increasing population. This initiative is the result of effective coordination between the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva and Fuerteventura’s Health Area Directorate.
Voices from Leadership
Adasat Goya, the director of SCS, emphasized the importance of this clinic, stating that it addresses the healthcare needs of the population while plans for a future permanent building are finalized. He described the demand for a clinic in El Cotillo as “historical,” highlighting the necessity of this step forward.
Isaí Blanco, the mayor of La Oliva, noted that this development marks a significant advancement in healthcare services for the northern part of the island. He expressed optimism that local residents will benefit from closer access to primary care, alleviating the burden on existing health centers in nearby areas.
Adding to the discussion, Lola García, the president of Cabildo, articulated the importance of expanding healthcare access throughout Fuerteventura. She pointed out that as the population grows, ensuring adequate health services becomes crucial, and this clinic effectively addresses existing needs in the northern region, paving the way for a future, more permanent facility.
As the Local Clinic in El Cotillo begins its service, it promises not only to enhance healthcare access but also to strengthen community health, ensuring that residents receive the care they deserve closer to home.
