Fuerteventura Hosts Filming of Canadian Film ‘Le Sablier’ by Oscar-Nominated Director Kim Nguyen

As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, the island is set to benefit from a significant film production investment.

Fuerteventura is the picturesque backdrop for the film Le Sablier (Hourglass), directed by Oscar-nominated Canadian filmmaker Kim Nguyen. This international feature, produced by the Canadian company Item 7, is being filmed almost entirely on the island over a span of 27 days, utilizing locations in La Oliva and Puerto del Rosario. Noodles Production serves as the French co-producer, while Fasten Films provides essential production services.

Le Sablier is rooted in real events, telling the harrowing story of Édith Blais, a Canadian who spent 450 days held captive in the Sahara Desert alongside her Italian boyfriend, Luca Tacchetto.

During a recent visit to the set, Lola García, president of the Cabildo (the island’s governing body), emphasized the significant opportunities that high-caliber productions bring to Fuerteventura. The film is expected to inject approximately €1.6 million into the local economy.

Nereida Calero, CEO of the Fuerteventura Film Commission, underscored the importance of such projects for boosting economic activity and job creation. The production of Le Sablier is anticipated to create around 50 job opportunities on the island, encompassing both permanent and temporary positions.

This film production not only highlights Fuerteventura’s appeal as a film location but also reinforces its potential as a hub for economic growth through the creative industries.
