Kites Fill the Great Beaches of Corralejo

The 36th Edition of the Corralejo International Kite Festival: A Colorful Commencement

A Record-Breaking Start

This past Friday, the 36th edition of the Corralejo International Kite Festival kicked off with flair and excitement, beginning at 10:00 AM. Not only did the festival attract an unprecedented number of participants, but the day was also blessed with ideal weather conditions—clear skies, mild temperatures, and winds hitting a perfect 30 kilometers per hour. This created a breathtaking spectacle as nearly 500 kites soared above the Grandes Playas, also known as the Natural Park of the Dunes of Corralejo. The inaugural flight featured a series of large, vivid kites, including one standout—the striking red fox that reached over three meters in height.

Prominent Guests and Officials

Among the crowd were the municipal corporation of La Oliva, led by Mayor Isaí Blanco, who performed the official flight ceremony. Notable figures included the Tourism and Environment Councilor David Fajardo, the Tourism, Blue Economy, and Biosphere Reserve Councillor Marlene Figueroa, and the New Technologies Councillor Carmen Alonso. Their presence underscored the importance of the event, stirring excitement and engagement in the local community.

Speeches of Significance

Mayor Isaí Blanco commented on the festival’s success, attributing it to a commitment from both government bodies and the organizing team. He proudly emphasized the festival’s growing international reputation as it has positioned Corralejo on the global map. Highlighting the region’s stunning natural backdrop—the park, the golden sands, and the favorable wind conditions—Blanco noted, “We have an enviable climate while the rest of the continent is facing colder temperatures.”

David Fajardo, the Tourism Councilor, hailed the festival as an essential economic engine for the area. He remarked on its international impact, noting numerous inquiries from non-EU countries interested in participating.

An Alluring Tourist Attraction

The festival not only showcases the vibrant culture of Corralejo but also solidifies its identity as a sustainable tourism destination. Marlene Figueroa accentuated that the event attracts not just sun-seekers but also those interested in social and environmental sustainability. The massive turnout of families and tourists contributes to the local economy, invigorating local commerce and dining establishments.

A Colorful Kaleidoscope

As the kites filled the sky, they transformed it into a colossal canvas of color and creativity. Giant animals, beloved cartoon characters, butterflies, witches, astronauts, and intricate geometric shapes danced through the air, bringing joy to thousands of spectators. A total of 210 participants contributed to this year’s record numbers, blending enormous kites with smaller, more dynamic ones that twisted and turned in the gentle breeze.

Educating the Next Generation

On this festive Friday, a hundred local schoolchildren from institutions such as CEIP Tindaya, Bernabé, and La Oliva took part in the festivity, becoming “kite masters” for a day. They learned to fly their very own kites, diving into an engaging hands-on experience that emphasized teamwork, creativity, and the joy of outdoor play.

Weekend Activities

As the weekend approaches, the excitement continues with endless kite-shaping displays, engaging workshops for all ages, live music, and colorful parades. A new highlight set for Saturday night includes a spectacular drone show, adding a modern twist to this long-standing tradition. Festival-goers can find registration details for workshops and the full event program on the official website, corralejokitefest.com.

Community and Collaboration

The Corralejo International Kite Festival is organized by the Tourism Department of La Oliva, with support from the Fuerteventura Council, the Government of the Canary Islands through Promotur, and various European programs like EcoTur2. Collaborations also extend to local businesses such as Naviera Armas and RIU Hotels and Resorts, demonstrating a collective effort to bring this vibrant festival to life.

The stage is set, and excitement fills the air as this beloved festival continues to grow, drawing kite enthusiasts, families, and tourists from around the world to celebrate this mesmerizing art form and rich community spirit.
