A Unique Experience at El Cohombrillo: Tourists in La Oliva
In an unprecedented turn of events, the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva has opened the doors of the municipal albergue at El Cohombrillo, nestled in the picturesque village of Lajares, to a group of tourists stranded on the island of Fuerteventura. This group was initially gathered to participate in the annual Fuerteventura Contact Improvisation Festival, a vibrant celebration of dance and creativity organized in collaboration with the local Concejalía de Cultura.
A Sudden Disruption
This year, approximately fifty individuals arrived at El Cohombrillo for the festival. However, when the state of alarm was declared, many found themselves unable to return to their home countries. Iballa Pérez, the councillor overseeing cultural affairs, explains the predicament: “The unfortunate situation arose when their flights were canceled, leaving ten festival participants unable to leave the island.”
In urgent response, the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva stepped in, ensuring that these unexpected guests had a safe and comfortable place to stay. The staff is actively monitoring their health and well-being, providing necessary support in these challenging times.
A Diverse Community
The group currently residing in El Cohombrillo includes visitors from a diverse array of countries: Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Belgium, and the United States. Among them is David Castañeda, a French individual with Spanish roots who shared insights into their daily life within the albergue.
“Here, we create a sense of community,” David elaborates. “We share everything—from our meals to organizing grocery runs.” This communal living has fostered camaraderie among the tourists as they navigate their unexpected situation together.
Navigating Challenges
Despite the sense of togetherness, the tourists face genuine challenges. Many have received communication from their embassies urging them to find their own means of returning home. However, with commercial flight options reduced drastically due to the pandemic, the logistics have become increasingly convoluted.
“Even when flights are available, the prices have skyrocketed,” David points out. “For many of us, it’s just not feasible.” The heightened costs combined with limited resources have left these individuals feeling trapped yet resilient.
Finding Silver Linings
While the circumstances may be far from ideal, many in the group express gratitude for their surroundings. “We feel fortunate to be confined here,” David shares, “in a space that is not only safe but also surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.” The expansive areas around El Cohombrillo allow them to enjoy fresh air and the stunning landscapes native to Fuerteventura.
The sense of gratitude extends to the support provided by the local government and community. “We appreciate the assistance and resources we’ve received during this time,” David concludes, reflecting the shared sentiment among his companions.
In this unique moment, the community spirit shines brightly at El Cohombrillo, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of people in the face of unforeseen challenges. The albergue has transformed into a place not only of shelter but also of connection, reflecting the power of human kindness and solidarity during trying times.
