A Celebration of Photography in El Cotillo
El Cotillo, a picturesque fishing village on the island of Fuerteventura, has become a vibrant hub for art and culture, particularly through a recent photography event that showcased local and international talent. Central to this celebration is Ricardo Schiassi, an Italian entrepreneur and photographer, whose restaurant Azzurro served as a backdrop for the festivities.
Schiassi strongly believes in the importance of cultural events in El Cotillo. “We need these types of events because we must invest in culture, particularly in photography,” he remarked, reflecting on his roots in a family of professionals from Bologna. During the event, he unveiled his latest project, “Mirada Inmortal,” a collection capturing the breathtaking essence of an African safari. This personal touch not only highlights his artistic vision but underscores his connection to the local community.
Workshops and Creative Expressions
The event wasn’t just about exhibitions; it also included practical workshops. Jo Hamer, a German photographer, conducted a workshop focusing on techniques for taking snapshots. Participants had the chance to gain hands-on experience and tips that could elevate their photography skills. In the charming patio of the cultural center, two expansive murals adorned the walls, the result of winners from the international competition titled “El Mar que nos une.” These murals serve not only as art but as a dialogue between nature and community.
Underwater Wonders and Family Moments
One of the awarded photographers, Mauro Ladu, shared the story behind his captivating underwater image featuring yoga instructor Sandra Bozic. Captured at Piedra Playa during ideal conditions, Ladu reflected on his stroke of luck to create such an ethereal piece.
Another captivating entry came from Lola Comas, whose photograph depicts a serene sunset with a family fishing on the shore. Lola took this heartwarming snapshot during a brief vacation on the island, and it reflects her connections to the local culture. “I’m thrilled to enhance public spaces with art,” she expressed, indicating her passion for blending family and nature in her work. The third winner, Juan Santana, also contributed his unique perspective to the collective artistic voice of the event.
The Sports Connection
The fun didn’t stop with traditional photography; the event introduced various elements of local sports life. Pablo Prieto, a surfer and photographer, presented his insights about capturing the thrill of surfing. He showcased multiple shots of local athlete Octavio González, emphasizing the exciting synergy between their shared passions. “Octavio has a bright future ahead in the sport,” Prieto noted, shedding light on the vibrant sports community within El Cotillo.
Moreover, Prieto highlighted the large number of photography enthusiasts focused on aquatic sports in the area. This engagement further enriches the local artistic landscape, creating a multifaceted dialogue about nature, community, and sports.
Urban Art Initiatives
There was also a broader initiative promoting urban art through photography. Many artists participated, including Raquel López Chicheri, whose piece “Los Maradores” explores the relationship between land and sea. Others like Alessandra Crusovin with “Criaturas del Océano” and Gabriel Fuselli’s “Cotillo en Tradición” showcased the diverse voices interpreting the island’s beauty.
The culmination of efforts resulted in a significant expansion beyond the initial three winners, featuring twelve new murals, a concept made possible by enthusiastic local business participation. Sole Aguiar, the councilwoman for Culture in La Oliva, remarked on how this collaboration reflects a thriving local community dedicated to enhancing cultural expression.
This celebration in El Cotillo is not merely an event but a gathering of artistic souls, each contributing their unique voice to the community’s growing narrative. It reinforces the village’s commitment to culture, creativity, and the art of photography that inspires both residents and visitors alike.
