Fuerteventura Reggae Festival 2022: A Celebration of Music and Culture

This September, music lovers and reggae enthusiasts will gather in La Oliva for the much-anticipated sixth edition of the Fuerteventura Reggae Festival. Set to take place on Friday, September 23, and Saturday, September 24, 2022, at the Tindaya Municipal Stadium, this festival promises to be a vibrant showcase of reggae music, community spirit, and cultural appreciation.

Commitment to Culture

Organized by the non-profit cultural association AJAI and supported by the Cultural Council of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the Department of Culture of the La Oliva City Council, the festival is a beacon of independent artistic expression on the island. Over the past two years, as global circumstances challenged many cultural events, the Fuerteventura Reggae Festival stood strong, reaffirming its dedication to the musical arts and solidifying its status as one of the largest reggae festivals in the Canary Islands.

A Stellar Line-Up

This year’s festival boasts an impressive lineup featuring both local and international reggae artists. Attendees can expect two days brimming with live music, highlighting the best of the reggae scene. On Friday, September 23, gates will open at 5:00 PM, welcoming attendees to the rhythmic sounds of Bio Selektah, the first act to set the stage.

From 7:00 PM until 11:00 PM, the main stage will feature performances by notable groups such as Rabadaba Collective, Radio Pirata, and Baba Sall & Raka Ndao. As the main acts wrap up, the festivities won’t stop there. The Sound System area will come alive with Roberto Sánchez and continue with the Reggaewise Sound System until the early hours, concluding around 3:00 AM.

Workshops and More

The following day, Saturday, September 24, will not only be about music. From 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, various workshops and talks will engage attendees, covering topics such as dub mixing, dancehall dancing, recycled percussion, and consciousness-raising discussions. This aspect of the festival emphasizes not just entertainment but education and community interactivity, making it a holistic cultural experience.

Gates will open again at 5:00 PM, leading into an evening filled with more live performances. Starting at 7:00 PM, fans will enjoy sets from artists like Palmera Rebelde, Lot Acosta, and Inés Pardo, concluding by 11:00 PM. Once again, the Sound System will take over the night, featuring Siroco Sound and Reggaewisse Sound System until 3:00 AM.

Dance and Performance

Between acts, audiences will also be treated to exciting performances from the Tenerife Dancehall Crew, who will showcase their dance skills and keep the energy high throughout the event. This blend of music and dance adds a dynamic factor to the festival, ensuring an engaging atmosphere for all attendees.

Free Entry and Amenities

One of the most appealing aspects of the Fuerteventura Reggae Festival is its commitment to accessibility. Entry is completely free, and no prior reservation is necessary, although attendees should note that the festival has a capacity of 1,500 people. Due to the festival’s guidelines to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment, attendees will be unable to bring outside food or beverages into the venue. However, a variety of food and drink stalls will be available, offering treats and refreshments to keep everyone energized.

Virtual Reach

Understanding the need for inclusivity in today’s world, the festival will also be streamed online. This digital aspect allows reggae fans who cannot attend in person to partake in the experience from afar, further extending the festival’s reach and ensuring that the spirit of reggae music can resonate with fans worldwide.

In summary, the Fuerteventura Reggae Festival 2022 in La Oliva is set to be an unforgettable weekend filled with music, culture, and community. With an exciting lineup, enriching workshops, and inclusive practices, this festival stands as a testament to the resilience and passion of the reggae community in the Canary Islands. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this cultural celebration is not to be missed!
