Igramar Apartments: A Beacon of Sustainable Tourism in Morro Jable

Celebrating Excellence in Tourism
Just a few weeks ago, Igramar Apartments in Morro Jable were honored with the prestigious Playa de Oro award for the best quality initiative at the Distinguished Tourism Awards of Fuerteventura 2024. This accolade underscores Igramar’s commitment to exceptional service and innovative sustainability practices, while also embracing a vision of a tourism project deeply rooted in local culture. The award represents a significant milestone for the company, reinforcing its status as a leader in the Canary Islands’ tourism sector.

A Commitment to Sustainability
To understand the deeper implications of this recognition, we spoke with Ignacio Pérez, the entrepreneur behind this family-owned brand. With over two decades of experience in the industry, Pérez reflects on the importance of this honor: “It is a great privilege and a testament to the hard work we’ve put in over the years, focusing not just on quality and service but also on innovation—especially in renewable energies.”

Igramar has made significant strides toward sustainability by installing over 120 photovoltaic panels and electric vehicle chargers. However, such changes come with challenges. Pérez candidly reveals, “The initial investment is undeniably a hurdle, especially in a competitive sector where balancing costs with sustainability is crucial.” Yet, Igramar firmly believes that environmental responsibility is not only beneficial for their clients but also for the Morro Jable community, aiming to be an integral part of the local ecosystem.

A Unique Business Model
Unlike many typical resort complexes, Igramar promotes a different tourism philosophy. “We focus on making tourists feel free to explore,” says Pérez. “We encourage our guests to enjoy local offerings, savor the local cuisine, and connect with the island’s residents.” This vision promotes a type of tourism that integrates seamlessly with the community and nurtures local economies, making experiences richer for both visitors and locals.

Addressing Mass Tourism Concerns
In light of recent critiques regarding mass tourism, Pérez emphasizes the urgent need for a shift towards more sustainable and conscious travel. “Canarias boasts a unique environment that we must protect,” he explains. “It’s essential for visitors to prioritize quality of life and respect for our surroundings. We’re proud to offer a delightful climate, stunning beaches, and a welcoming community that makes tourists feel at home.”

Future Aspirations for Igramar
Looking ahead, Igramar has ambitious plans for expansion, including a new boutique hotel in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, set to open in 2025. This project aims to embrace the historic charm of the Vegueta area, offering travelers a chance to explore beyond the typical beach tourism experience. Pérez envisions providing a more personalized stay, particularly for cruise passengers who might return for future visits.

Nurturing the Next Generation
As a family-owned enterprise, Igramar is now preparing for its transition to the next generation. “This legacy is crucial to me,” Pérez shares. His children are currently training in the tourism sector, with one of his children already gaining experience abroad, while his daughter manages a hotel in Jamaica. “My hope is that they will take over Igramar in the future, ensuring that our family values and commitment to Canarian tourism continue.”

Reflecting on the journey thus far, Pérez expresses gratitude to many who have contributed to Igramar’s success, from loyal clients to dedicated staff and supportive collaborators, including the local government. “Igramar is more than just a business; it’s a commitment to the future of Fuerteventura and we take pride in playing our part in that narrative.” The perseverance, vision, and dedication of Igramar Apartments not only elevate them within the tourism industry but also serve to inspire a sustainable approach to travel that benefits both visitors and the local environment.
