The picturesque municipality of Puerto del Rosario is on the brink of a transformative housing project, aimed at addressing one of the most pressing issues faced by its residents: affordable housing. Recently, officials from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Puerto del Rosario Town Council laid the first stone for the construction of 47 affordable rental homes on Calle Don Quijote.
With a total investment of €6,816,577.85, this initiative showcases a collaborative effort between various levels of government. The funding sources include the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, the Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canary Island Housing Institute, and contributions from the European NextGeneration funds, along with land donated by the Puerto del Rosario Town Council.
During the ceremony, prominent figures such as Lola García, the President of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura; Pablo Rodríguez, the Regional Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility; David de Vera, the Mayor of Puerto del Rosario; and María Jesús de la Cruz, the islands director of the General State Administration, delivered speeches emphasizing the significance of this project. They were joined by other important officials, highlighting the overall commitment to improving the housing situation in the region.
President Lola García stressed that the Cabildo is investing more than €54 million into enhancing housing across Fuerteventura, which she identified as one of the major challenges facing the territory. This investment is the result of a concerted effort among administrations to address key social issues on the island. The new construction will contribute to the realization of 176 homes in various municipalities, with Puerto del Rosario alone benefiting from 47 newly constructed homes.
Moreover, García also pointed out that in Puerto del Rosario, 35 homes have already been allocated in Bernegal, alongside plans for an additional 24 homes in Rosa Vila. This initiative also complements ongoing construction efforts in the urban area of Corralejo.
The Regional Minister of Public Works highlighted that the government has prioritized housing as never before in the Canaries. “Our goal is to mobilize instruments and public funds to address the housing emergency that families face,” Rodríguez stated. He added that more than 2,000 new public housing units are slated for construction across the archipelago, with several already allocated in Fuerteventura. He anticipates that another promotion will be ready by the end of the year in Rosa Vila, Puerto del Rosario.
Echoing this sentiment, Mayor David de Vera described the laying of the first stone in Don Quijote as a sign of good fortune, marking the beginning of various projects aimed at providing vital housing solutions to meet social demand in the municipality.
According to María Jesús de la Cruz, the island’s representative of the General State Administration, this project exemplifies successful collaboration across different levels of government to address housing shortages. “We face a significant deficit in both the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura, and today’s event symbolizes the steps being taken to create new housing in Puerto del Rosario,” she explained.
The developments on Calle Don Quijote are set to feature a total of 47 homes, complete with parking, storage rooms, and equipped kitchens. The design includes a range of accommodations: 5 one-bedroom homes, 10 two-bedroom units, 26 three-bedroom homes (two of which will be accessible for individuals with reduced mobility), and 6 four-bedroom units, along with one six-bedroom home. Importantly, the entire building is designed with energy efficiency and CO₂ emission reduction in mind, reflecting a modern approach to sustainable living.
