Accident Involving Fire and Rollover in a Ravine Leaves One Dead and One Injured in Fuerteventura

Recent Traffic Accidents in Fuerteventura: A Somber Week

Fuerteventura, one of the stunning Canary Islands, has recently witnessed a concerning uptick in traffic accidents. This past Saturday, two separate incidents unfolded, leading to heartbreak and injuries within the local community. Reports from various emergency services indicate that this week has seen two tragic accidents, including a second fatality in mere days.

Tragic Fatality in La Oliva

The first incident occurred at approximately 3:20 PM on the FV-10 road in La Oliva. Emergency services, coordinated through the Centro Coordinador de Emergencias y Seguridad (CECOES) 112 of the Canary Islands Government, received an alarming alert regarding a vehicle that had overturned and subsequently caught fire, with a person trapped inside.

Responding swiftly, both a medical ambulance and a basic life support ambulance from the Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC) were dispatched to the scene. Additionally, local firefighters from the Service of Extinction and Salvage in La Oliva, along with the local police and Guardia Civil, were on site to tackle the emergency.

Upon arrival, the firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the flames engulfing the vehicle and ensured the surrounding area was secured. Tragically, upon assessment, medical personnel confirmed that the driver—who was the sole occupant of the car—had lost his life in the accident. The Guardia Civil initiated necessary procedural investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Narrow Escape in Jandía

Just twenty minutes earlier, at 2:59 PM, a second incident took place on a dirt road leading to Punta de Jandía, within the jurisdiction of Pájara. This report also reached emergency dispatchers at CECOES 112, who were informed of a vehicle that had plummeted down a ravine.

Emergency protocols activated quickly, leading to the deployment of two ambulances from SUC, as well as local firefighters from Pájara and the local police.

Upon their arrival, responders found that a 55-year-old male driver had managed to extricate himself from the vehicle without assistance. However, he required medical attention and was subsequently transported to the Morrojable Health Center, where he was diagnosed with moderate, multiple contusions. Firefighters were tasked with securing the vehicle post-collision, and the local police began their investigative procedures.

These incidents highlight the importance of road safety and the unpredictability of driving conditions, especially in the rugged terrain of Fuerteventura. The community holds its breath as it navigates a week marked by unexpected grief and reminders of the fragility of life on the road.
