The arrival of this aircraft responds to a historical demand of the Majorera population and will improve the emergency response capacity, especially in a territory characterized by geographical dispersion and long distances. The new helicopter is part of the renewal of the fleet of the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), promoted by the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, with a global investment of 39 million euros. In total, three advanced life support medical aircraft have been incorporated, with bases in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. Each helicopter is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including mechanical ventilators, neonatal incubators, high-flow oxygen therapy systems and cardiopulmonary life support equipment. In addition, it has a human team made up of a pilot, commander and medical personnel specialized in emergencies. From AM-CC they emphasize that the permanent base in Fuerteventura will allow continuous operation, 24 hours a day throughout the year, which will mean a significant improvement in urgent healthcare. Criticism of the previous legislature The political party has also pointed out that this demand was not addressed in the previous legislature, when, they claim, the Government of the so-called Pact of Flowers considered that the investment was too high to be allocated exclusively to Fuerteventura. In this sense, they highlight that the incorporation of the helicopter has been possible thanks to the current regional Executive and an amendment presented by the AM-CC deputies in the Parliament of the Canary Islands to include this resource in the budgets. Likewise, they value the coordination between administrations, with the participation of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the island’s town councils, as a key element to make this project a reality. More resources for medical transportation Despite this progress, AM-CC considers it necessary to continue strengthening the urgent medical transportation system on the island. In this sense, they have announced that they will continue to demand the incorporation of at least two new sanitized ambulances to address population growth and improve care coverage. The training has also highlighted other improvements promoted in health matters during the current legislature, such as the launch of the Hemodynamics Unit at the Virgen de la Peña Hospital, the advances in the future Hospital del Sur in La Lajita or the reinforcement of home care for palliative patients. With the incorporation of the medical helicopter, Fuerteventura takes a step forward in improving its health system, reinforcing the resources available to deal with emergency situations and moving towards more efficient care adapted to the reality of the island.
