Antigua Celebrates the Fifth Anniversary of the Craft Fair This Weekend

Discover the Charm of Artisan Crafts this Holiday Season

As the festive season approaches, there’s an exciting event that promises to celebrate creativity and craftsmanship in Fuerteventura. This Saturday, November 15, and Sunday, November 16, the Plaza de Antigua will transform into a vibrant marketplace, showcasing the talents of about thirty dedicated artisans. Open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Saturday and 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Sunday, the Encuentro y Venta de Artesanía aims to provide unique gift options for the upcoming Christmas celebrations.

A Celebration of Five Years

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Encuentro y Venta de Artesanía, an initiative born from a desire to support local artisans and rejuvenate their economy, especially in the wake of the pandemic. Mayor Matías Peña García emphasizes the significance of this event: “We are here to boost the artisan sector, ensuring these skilled individuals have the resources they need to thrive.”

A Collaborative Effort for Local Artisans

Organized by the Ayuntamiento de Antigua in collaboration with the Concejalía de Cultura and the Fundación Colectivo Mafasca, this event is more than just a market; it’s a community engagement effort. The objective is clear: to bolster the economic prospects of artisans in the area while providing locals and visitors with the opportunity to find meaningful, handcrafted gifts just in time for Christmas.

Unique Gifts That Tell a Story

In a world increasingly dominated by mass-produced items, the appeal of handmade crafts is undeniable. Each piece tells a story—whether it’s the wafting scent of leather, the earthy aroma of clay, or the smooth touch of silk. Jonathan Peña, the area’s councilor, highlights the value of giving handmade gifts: “Regifting artisan crafts is a sure way to delight someone special. Each item—whether it’s traditional dolls, palm hats, or exquisite silver jewelry—is unique. They have the ability to convey sentiments that store-bought goods simply cannot.”

Enriching the Experience with Music and Performance

The arts and crafts fair is not just about shopping; it’s also an experience to cherish. Attendees can enjoy a range of performances throughout the weekend. Saturday morning kicks off with a Tribute to Nueva Trova at 11:30 AM, followed by lively tunes from Banda El Cuco. The afternoon features a delightful performance called Susurros Latinoamericanos by the Parranda de Vitolo at 5:30 PM.

Sunday promises equally engaging acts, starting with the Parranda de Son de Antaño at 11:30 AM and a subsequent gathering of soloists. The day wraps up at 4:30 PM with a performance from Parranda La Polvajera, providing a rich soundtrack to the celebration of local artistry.

A Perfect Holiday Outing

Whether you’re searching for the perfect gift or simply looking to immerse yourself in the local culture, the Encuentro y Venta de Artesanía offers a chance to connect with the community in a festive atmosphere. It’s a reminder that the holiday season brings not only the joy of giving but also the opportunity to appreciate the hard work and passion of local artisans.

So mark your calendars and join us in the Plaza de Antigua for a weekend filled with art, music, and the spirit of handcrafted excellence. Come ready to explore, enjoy, and find that one-of-a-kind gift that will surely bring joy this Christmas!
